Worm Bearing Preload Check

Before checking worm gear preload, check to ensure intermediate shaft flex coupling is not distorted and steering column is aligned.
1. Remove pitman arm from ball stud.
2. Lubricate worm shaft seal with drop of automatic transmission fluid.
3. Remove horn pad assembly from steering wheel and turn wheel slowly to either stop.
4. Using suitable inch pound wrench on steering wheel nut, measure torque required to turn steering wheel 1{1/2} turns at a constant speed. If required torque exceeds specifications listed at end of section, readjust worm gear preload.
