Worm Bearing Preload, Adjust

1. Remove steering gear from vehicle.
2. Torque sector shaft cover bolts to 40 ft. lbs.
3. Loosen worm bearing adjuster plug locknut and tighten worm bearing adjuster nut until all endplay has been removed. Lubricate worm shaft seal with drop of automatic transmission fluid.
4. Turn worm shaft to full right position. Using inch pound wrench mounted on steering wheel nut, measure left turn torque required to rotate worm shaft 1{1/2} turns. If torque requirements exceed specifications listed at end of section, tighten or loosen adjusting nut until proper preload is obtained. After adjustment is completed, torque locknut to 187 ft. lbs.
