Inspection
Fig. 6 Inspection Of Sector Shaft:
Clean all components in cleaning solvent prior to inspection.
1. Inspect all bearings and races. Replace as necessary.
2. Inspect bushing in sector cover. If bushing is worn, replace cover.
3. Inspect teeth on ball nut for chipping. If teeth are defective, replace ball nut and worm shaft as an assembly.
4. Inspect ball nut for free rotation on worm shaft. If sticking or binding is found, replace entire assembly.
5. Inspect housing for cracks and damage. Inspect needle bearings inside housing for missing or damaged needles. Replace housing if any defects are found.
6. Inspect sector shaft gear teeth for chipping, wear or metal fatigue. Replace if defective.
7. Check clearance between sector adjusting screw head and bottom of sector shaft T-slot, Fig. 6. If clearance is more than .004 in., add shims until clearance is within .004 in.
8. Hold sector shaft adjusting screw and rotate sector shaft, Fig. 6. Sector shaft should rotate freely. If sector shaft does not rotate freely, increase T-slot clearance by adding an additional shim. Do not exceed .004 in. clearance.
