ALTITUDE COMPENSATOR
1985-1/2 - 1987 ECONOLINE W/5.8L 4V ENGINES

SPECIAL NOTE:

The Altitude Compensator kit should only be installed on vehicles that will be operated in altitudes above 4000 feet.

The following instructions describe the installation procedure for the Altitude Compensator Kit. The location of the compensator is based on durability, contamination, temperature and functional requirements. The compensator should be installed as indicated. However, since these vehicles may contain unique options and/or are completed or modified by different final stage manufacturers, it is not possible to identify all the designs and modifications used. Therefore, if it is required to relocate the compensator assembly, the following guidelines must be used:

^ Mount the compensator within the hose lengths provided and with the brown and green vacuum switch towers pointing up (See Figure 1).
^ Mount the compensator in a way that places the aneroid (round cylinderical device inside of the bracket) centerline as nearly parallel to the ground as possible.

^ Locate as far away from heat sources as possible.

If you encounter difficulties not anticipated in these instructions, contact the closest Ford Parts and Service Division District Office for assistance.

ALTITUDE COMPENSATOR KIT INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

NOTE: This kit is designed to be used with other modification kits and should not be used alone. Consult your basic modification kit instructions to determine if this kit is required on the vehicle you are servicing.

1. Remove the interior engine cover for accessibility to the engine.

2. Remove the air cleaner.

3. Remove the right side battery for access to the right fender apron.

NOTE: Remove the starter solenoid located to the top and right of the battery if A/C sight glass tube obstructs access to the altitude compensator mounting area.

4. Cut the PCV hose, installed as part of a fuel system modification kit, as required to install a 3/8" vacuum tee (Item 3) in the PCV hose, near the front of the carburetor. Route the new PCV hose with the plastic tee under the spark plug wires along the right rocker arm cover to the front of the carburetor throttle body.

5. Mount the altitude compensator assembly (Item 1) to right fender apron raised pad area using two (2) 1/4-20 nut and washer assemblies (item 6) provided, (See Figure 1). Torque nuts to 6-9 N-m (55-85 in.lbs.).

NOTE: If mounting holes are not drilled through the fender apron, drill two (2) 5/16" holes. Use stamped dimples in the raised pad area as hole locaters. Seal any open holes or voids in the fender apron with body sealer to prevent moisture/dust contamination of compensator air inlet filter.

FIGURE 3:

6. Route the 3/8" hose from the altitude compensator air manifold to the 3/8" plastic tee which was installed in the PCV hose during the installation of a fuel system modification kit. (See Figure 3).

NOTE: Route this hose so that it is elevated above the PCV hose (minimum six (6) inches) to prevent possible fuel/oil migration to the compensator assembly.

FIGURE 2:

7. Install a 3/16" plastic tee (Item 4) and the 1.0" length of 3/16" vacuum hose (Item 9) into the open end of the EGR vacuum line (white plastic) and connect the 3/16" vacuum hose to the carburetor EGR port. (See Figure 2).

8. Route the 3/16" vacuum hose (green stripe) from the altitude compensator vacuum valve (black) to the plastic tee installed in the EGR vacuum hose. Cut hose to required length.

9. Locate the intake manifold vacuum fitting (tree) at the rear of the intake manifold. Install a 1/4-3/16 vacuum tee (Item 5) in the 1/4" vacuum line connected to the intake manifold tree. Cut the 1/4" vacuum hose at a convenient location and insert the vacuum tee.

10. Locate the 3/16" vacuum hose (red stripe) from the altitude compensator vacuum/electric switch and route this hose behind the battery and in front of the heat housing. Then route the hose under the thermactor outlet hoses around distributor (front or rear) to the 1/4-3/16 vacuum tee installed in step 9.

NOTE: Route and secure the hose near the front of the heater housing to avoid the hose being pinched when installing battery in step 13.

11. Ground the altitude compensator assembly (black wire) to a suitable body location. Cut the wire to the required length, attach the ring tongue terminal. (Item 8 provided in the kit) (See Figure 2).

FIGURE 3:

12. On the wiring harness, locate the pink/purple with orange stripe wire (298 circuit) entering connector (C305) (See Figure 3). Cut the altitude compensator red lead wire to the length required to connect it to the pink/purple wire using the wiring tap (Item 8). Use the adjustable strap (Item 2) to hold the red lead to the wire harness.
13. Reinstall starter solenoid (if removed) and battery.

14. Reinstall air cleaner.

15. Obtain an Authorized modification Decal (Form FPS-8262 [STAT 5941 2 in Canada] on the Dealer Weekly Stock Order Pad) (Figure 4) and list the date, dealer number, and alteration performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal. Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.

16. Reinstall engine cover.
