SUBJECT - ANNOUNCING SAFETY RECALL 88S39 FOR 1987 AND 1988 F-350 4X2 TRUCKS WITH DUAL REAR WHEELS BUILT THROUGH JANUARY 7, 1988 (CHASSIS CAB, REGULAR CAB, SUPER CAB AND CREW CAB MODELS)
REFERENCE - MR. J. D. HENDERSON'S JANUARY 12, 1988 TELEX ANNOUNCING A DELIVERY HOLD ON 1988 MODEL F-350 VEHICLES AS DESCRIBED ABOVE.
IN ADDITION TO RECALL ANNOUNCEMENT, THIS TELEX EXTENDS THE DELIVERY HOLD ON 1988 MODELS TO COMPARABLE 1987 MODELS.
THESE VEHICLES MAY HAVE OR MAY DEVELOP A STEERING SYSTEM SHIMMY THAT EVENTUALLY COULD DAMAGE VEHICLE COMPONENTS AND POTENTIALLY COULD RESULT IN LOSS OF STEERING. A VEHICLE CRASH COULD RESULT. PARTS AVAILABILITY DATES FOR SERVICE WILL BE:
1) UNITS IN SERVICE WITH "SEVERE" SHIMMY - FEB. 15, 1988
2) UNITS ON DEALER DELIVERY HOLD - MARCH 13, 1988
3) UNITS IN SERVICE WITH OUT "SEVERE" SHIMMY - APRIL 15, 1988
1) UNITS IN SERVICE HAVING "SEVERE" SHIMMY CONCERNS MUST NOT BE OPERATED UNTIL REPAIRS ARE COMPLETED. THESE VEHICLES CANNOT BE SERVICED UNTIL PARTS ARE AVAILABLE - APPROXIMATE DATE FEBRUARY 15, 1988. WHEN NECESSARY, PROVIDE CUSTOMER A FREE LOANER VEHICLE (EXCEPT FOR FUEL) UNTIL SERVICE IS COMPLETED. FREE LOANERS WILL NOT BE AUTHORIZED AFTER SERVICE PARTS BECOME AVAILABLE. NOTE TO DEALERS IN PUERTO RICO AND U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS - OASIS MESSAGE 3462 IS NOT TO BE USED FOR SERVICING VEHICLES WITH SEVERE SHIMMY.
2) TRUCKS ON DELIVERY HOLD MUST NOT BE SERVICED USING THE 3462 OASIS MESSAGE. SERVICE THESE TRUCKS USING THE PARTS AVAILABLE AFTER MARCH 15. AFTER SERVICE THEY MAY BE RELEASED FROM DELIVERY HOLD.
3) UNIT IN SERVICE WITHOUT "SEVERE" SHIMMY CONCERNS ARE TO BE SERVICED AFTER APRIL 15, 1988 WHEN PARTS SHORTAGES ARE NO LONGER EXPECTED. FREE LOANERS ARE NOT AUTHORIZED FOR GROUP 3 CUSTOMERS.
A DETAILED SERVICE RECALL BULLETIN IS BEING PREPARED FOR GROUP 1 VEHICLES AND WILL BE MAILED TO INVOLVED DEALERS THIS WEEK. BULLETINS FOR GROUP 2 AND 3 WILL BE MAILED AT A LATER DATE.

SUBJECT: Safety Recall 88S39 - Certain 1987/88 F-350 4x2 (except 1988 F-350 Super Duty) Trucks and 4x2 Chassis Cabs with Dual Rear Wheels for Front-End Shimmy Concern
VEHICLES AFFECTED
All 1987/88 F-350 4x2 (except 1988 F-350 Super Duty) trucks and 4x2 chassis cabs (includes Regular -, Super - and Crew-Cab models) with dual rear wheels built before January 7, 1988.
REASON FOR THIS RECALL
These vehicles may have or may develop a severe front-and shimmy that eventually could damage vehicle components and eventually could result in loss of steering control. Loss of steering control could result in a vehicle crash. To correct this condition, front-end components will be inspected and modified or replaced, as appropriate.
PLEASE NOTE DO NOT MODIFY TRUCKS ON DELIVERY HOLD AT THIS TIME. THE PROCEDURES
IN THIS BULLETIN ARE ONLY FOR CUSTOMERS' TRUCKS WITH SEVERE SHIMMY OR HAVING HAD SEVERE SHIMMY. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION WILL BE RELEASED FOR:

ACTION BY FORD MOTOR COMPANY
Ford is recalling the subject vehicles to correct this condition, at no cost to owners. Owners of trucks with severe shimmy are being notified by First Class Mail to return their vehicles to their dealers without delay. Other owners are asked to return to dealers after April 15.
We have enclosed a list of vehicles involved in this recall delivered to your dealership. If no vehicle listing is enclosed, you are not involved at this time, and this Service Recall Bulletin is for information only.
DEALER-OWNER CONTACT
If a suspect vehicle has been sold, but the owner's name and address does not appear on the list, contrat the owner immediately. Provide the owner with a copy of the attached owner letter.
FIRST PRIORITY Promptly correct units for which SEVERE SHIMMY has been reported.
Eligible vehicles not on the enclosed list should also be serviced.
CARES/OASIS DEALERS IN PUERTO RICO AND THE U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS MUST USE CARES
OR OASIS TO DETERMINE IF A VEHICLE IS ELIGIBLE FOR THIS RECALL.
Advise owners of any other recalls that may be uncompleted. You should attempt to complete all open recalls on these vehicles on a single visit by the owner.

SERVICE REIMBURSEMENT FORM 1864
SPECIAL PREPARATION INSTURCTIONS - FORM 1864
Owners of eligible vehicles will NOT have a pre-printed Form 1864. You must use a blank Form 1864. Only the Form 1864 is acceptable for reimbursement on this program. Form 1864 preparation instructions are contained in your Warranty & Policy Manual and in the Recall Organizer Manual. The Form 1864 must be completely filled out and signed by authorized dealer personnel. Dealers are to mail the second copy of the Form 1864 for reimbursement. Claims must be submitted for all completed units.
NOTICE
Owners may inform the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration if the recall is not performed without charge or ina reasonable time after the vehicle is brought to your dealership for repair.
PARTS
Parts will not be direct shipped for this recall. Service partfor customer truckswith "severe" shimmy will be available February 15, 1988. THESE PARTS ARE IN VERYSHORT SUPPLY. DO NOT ORDER ANY OF THESE PARTS UNLESS YOU HAVE A CUSTOMER'S TRUCK WITH SEVERE SHIMMY. ORDERING EXTRA PARTS WILL LEAD TO AN IMMEDIATE BACK-LOG OF PARTS. A MAXIMUM ORDER QUANTITY OF ONE (PER PART NUMBER) WILL BE IN EFFECT UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.
