REWORKING FRONT SUSPENSION ON 1987/88 F350 4 X 2 DUAL REAR WHEEL VEHICLES ON HOLD
THIS PROCEDURE IS TO BE USED ONLY ON DEALER STOCK VEHICLES
The following describes the actions required to revise the front suspension to correct the potential for front end shimmy.
Requirements are:
1. Replace both axle pivot bushings with E4TZ-3B177-B
2. Replace front radius arms with E8TZ-3A360-A (Right side identified with Red Paint Stripes) and E8TZ-3A360-B (Left side identified with Green Paint Stripe).
3. Swap camber (caster) adjusters side-to-side.
4. Replace springs per chart in text.
5. Set toe-in.
Procedure is as follows:
REMOVING FRONT SPRING (Ref: 1988 Truck Shop Manual, Vol. A. Pg 14-21-3):
1. Raise the front of the vehicle and place safety stands under the frame and a jack under the axle. Refer to the 1988 Shop Manual, Vol. F, Section 50-04, Pre-Delivery Hoisting and Jacking, for hoisting instructions.
NOTE: The axle must be supported on the jack throughout spring removal and installation, and must not be permitted to hang by the brake hose. If the length of the brake hose is not sufficient to provide adequate clearance for removal and installation of the spring, the disc brake caliper must be removed from the spindle according to the procedures specified in the 1988 Truck Shop Manual, Vol. A, Section 12-24. "Disc Brakes - Light and Heavy Duty - Sliding Caliper."
After removal, the caliper must be placed on the frame or otherwise supported to prevent suspending the caliper from the brake hose. These precautions are absolutely necessary to prevent serious damage to the tube portion of the caliper hose assembly.
2. Disconnect the shock absorber from the lower bracket.
3. Remove the spring upper retainer attaching bolts or screws from the top of the spring upper seat and remove the retainer.
4. Remove the nut attaching the spring lower retainer to the lower seat and lower rubber insulator and axle and remove the retainer.
5. Slowly lower the axle and remove the left spring.
FIGURE 1 - REMOVING AXLE PIVOT BUSHING:
AXLE PIVOT BUSHING REPLACEMENT (Ref: 1988 Truck Shop Manual, Vol. A, Pg. 14-21-10):
Removal Refer to Attachment 4, Figure 1
1. Remove the left axle pivot nut and bolt. Pull the pivot end of axle down until bushing is exposed.
2. Install Forcing Screw (T78P-5638-A1), Bushing Remover T80T-5638-A2, and Receiver Cup (T78P-5638-A4) onto pivot bushing. Turn the forcing screw clockwise to remove the pivot bushing, (scrap removed bushing).

FIGURE 3:
Installation Refer to Attachment 4, Figure 2
3. Place new pivot bushing (E4TZ-3B177-B) in axle. Assemble Receiver Cup (T78P-5638-A2), Forcing Screw (T78P-5638-A1) and Bushing Replacer (T78P-5638-A3), as shown in Attachment 4, Figure 2. Note: Add 4 to 6 washers between head of forcing screw and bushing replacer. Install bushing into axle leaving 1/4 inch gap between the shoulder of the bushing outer metal and the face of the I-Beam as shown in Attachment 4, Figure 3.
4. Position axle in pivot bracket and install axle pivot bolt through the bracket and axle. Install nut but do not tighten at this time.

FIGURE 3:
RADIUS ARM CHANGE (Ref: 1988 Truck Shop Manual, Vol. A. Pg. 14-21-10):
Removal Refer to Attachment 5
1. Remove the spring lower seat from the left radius arm, and then remove the bolt and nut that attaches the radius arm to the axle.
2. Remove the nut, rear washer, insulator and spacer from the rear side of the radius arm bracket.
3. Remove the left radius arm from the vehicle.
4. Remove lower shock bracket from radius arm and install on new radius arm. Tighten the nut to 37-50 N-m (27-37).
FIGURE 3:
Installation
5. Position the front end of the new radius arm to the left axle. Install the attaching bolt from underneath through radius arm and axle, and then install the nut finger tight.
NOTE: The red paint stripe oa the radius arm indicates right hand radius arm.
The green paint stripe on the radius arm indicates left hand radius arm.

FIGURE 2:
6. Install the retainer, inner insulator on the new radius arm stud and insert the stud through the radius arm rear bracket. DO NOT REINSTALL WEDDING BAND". DISCARD "WEDDING BAND" SPACER (N804264-S2). Attachment 5, Figure 1.
NOTE: Vehicles with EFI engines must have a heat shield and washer installed on the right side only (See Attachment 5, Figure 2).
7. Install the spacer, outer insulator, rear washer and nut on the arm stud at the rear side of the arm rear bracket. Tighten the nut to 109-162 N-m (80-120 ft.lbs.).
8. Tighten the nut on the radius arm-to-axle bolt to 364-446 N-m (269-329 ft.lbs.).
9. Install the spring lower seat and spring insulator on the radius arm so that the hole in the seat goes over the arm-to-axle bolt.
SWAP CAMBER/CASTER ADJUSTERS FROM SIDE TO SIDE (Ref. 1988 Truck Shop Manual, Vol. A, Pg. 14-2 -9).
Removal
1. Remove the cotter pin and loosen the nut on the lower ball joint on left side. Loosen the nut to the end of the stud only.
2. Remove the upper ball joint camber adjuster clamp bolt nut and remove the clamp bolt from the axle.
3. Remove the camber adjuster from the axle using Tool D81T-3010-B to wedge the adjuster out of the axle.
Installation
4. Install the RH side camber adjuster into the LH axle aligning the slot in the adjuster correctly.
5. Install the adjuster on the upper ball joint stud and tap the adjuster into the axle.
6. Install the clamp bolt and nut in the axle. Tighten the nut to 65-88 N-m (48-65 ft.lbs.).
7. Tighten the left lower ball joint stud nut to 149-190 N-m (110-140 ft.lbs.).
8. Repeat steps 4 and 5 on RH axle to install the LH side camber adjuster into the RH axle aligning the slot in the adjuster correctly.
INSTALL NEW FRONT SPRING (Ref: 1988 Truck Shop Manual, Vol. A, Pg. 14-21-3):
1. Determine original spring part number installed on vehicles and refer to chart to determine new spring to install:

NOTE: After front spring replacement, obtain an authorized modification label number FPS8262 and fill out as shown below, including the date of repair.
Front springs replaced with new springs code .
The new spring code is found in the foregoing chart under the "new compliance label code" heading.
Attach completed label to door opening "B" pillar area next to the Ford vehicle certification label. Protect the label with the clear overlay. Do not cover any existing labels.
Installation
2. Place the new left spring in position and slowly raise the front axle.
3. Position the spring lower retainer over the stud, lower rubber insulator and lower seat, and install the attaching nut.
4. Position the upper retainer over the spring coil and against the spring upper seat, and install the attaching screw.
5. Tighten the upper retainer attaching bolt and lower retainer attaching nut to specifications which follow:
