A/T - A4LD Premature Converter Bushing Failure
TECHNICAL BULLETIN # 182DATE: April 1993
TRANSMISSION: A4LD
SUBJECT: Premature Converter Bushing Failure
APPLICATION: Ford
PREMATURE CONVERTER BUSHING FAILURE
2.8,2.9, AND 4.0 ENGINES
Premature wear or a repeat failure of the converter hub, bellhousing bushing, converter seal and/or pump assembly may be caused by a worn or broken flywheel spacer.
The spacer is located between the fly-wheel and crankshaft. The pilot on the front of the converter is located by the hole in the flywheel spacer.
Wear in the center hole of the spacer will not allow the converter to be indexed on center, possibly resulting in severe and rapid wear of the front bushing and converter hub.
The spacer has also been known to break. Remove the flywheel and visually inspect the spacer on every engine that requires it.
