Drive Axles, Bearings and Joints: Service and Repair
Fig. 1 Exploded View Of Spindle, Shaft & Joint Assembly:
1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front wheels.
2. Remove disc brake caliper, hub locks, wheel bearings and locknuts, then the hub, rotor and outer wheel bearing cone, Fig. 1.
3. Remove and discard grease seal from rotor using slide hammer tool No. T50T-100-A and grease seal remover tool No. 1175-AC or equivalents.
4. Using bearing cup puller tool No. D78P-1225-B or equivalent, remove inner wheel bearing, then the inner and outer bearing cups.
5. Remove spindle to steering knuckle attaching nuts, then break spindle loose from knuckle and remove splash shield.
6. Remove shaft and joint assembly from right side of vehicle by pulling assembly out of carrier.
7. Remove and discard clamp from shaft and joint assembly and the stub shaft on right side of carrier. Slide rubber boot onto stub shaft, then pull shaft and joint assembly from stub shaft splines.
8. Install spindle, on second step, in suitable soft jawed vise.
9. Remove oil seal and needle bearing from spindle using bearing remover tool No. T50T-100-A and grease seal remover tool No. 1175-AC, or equivalent. Remove oil seal from shaft, if necessary.
10. Reverse procedure to install. Tighten spindle to steering knuckle attaching nuts to specifications.
