Engine: Service and Repair
1. On 1992 models, disarm airbag system as outlined in MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES.2. Disconnect battery ground cable and drain cooling system.
3. Install protective seat covers, then remove hood cover and air cleaner assembly.
4. On EFI models, relieve fuel system pressure as follows:
a. Locate, then disconnect either fuel pump, inertia switch or inline high pressure fuel pump electrical connector.
b. Crank engine for approximately ten seconds. Engine may start and operate for a short time. If so, crank engine an additional five seconds after engine stalls.
c. Connect electrical connector disconnected in step a.
5. On all models, remove front bumper, then the grille and lower gravel deflector as an assembly.
6. Disconnect radiator hose from engine, then remove alternator splash shield, if equipped, and the lower radiator hose from radiator.
7. On models equipped with automatic transmission, disconnect transmission oil cooler lines from radiator.
8. On all models, remove radiator and fan shroud, if equipped.
9. Disconnect heater hoses from engine.
10. Disconnect alternator from mounting bracket and position aside.
11. On models equipped with power steering, remove steering pump drive belt, then disconnect pump and support from mounting bracket and position aside.
12. On all models, disconnect and plug fuel line from fuel rail. Label, then disconnect all EFI (if equipped) electrical connectors and vacuum lines that will interfere with engine removal.
13. Disconnect distributor and sender unit wires and the brake booster hose from engine.
14. Disconnect electronic engine control harness from all sensors, if equipped.
15. Disconnect accelerator cable and remove bracket from engine.
16. On models equipped with automatic transmission, disconnect kickdown cable from bell crank.
17. On all models, remove exhaust manifold heat deflector, then the exhaust pipe-to-manifold attaching nuts.
18. Disconnect transmission vacuum line from intake manifold and junction.
19. Remove upper transmission-to-engine attaching bolts.
20. On models equipped with automatic transmission, remove transmission dipstick tube support bolt from intake manifold.
21. On all models, raise and support vehicle, then drain engine oil.
22. Disconnect wires from starter, then remove starter motor.
23. Remove flywheel inspection cover, then the four converter attaching nuts and front engine support nuts.
24. Remove oil filter, then the remaining transmission-to-engine nuts.
25. Lower vehicle, then remove engine assembly using suitable lifting equipment.
26. Reverse procedure to install. Tighten engine to transmission bolts to specifications. Rearm airbag system.
