Removal and Installation

1. On 1992 and 1993 models, disarm airbag system as outlined in MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES.
2. On all models, disconnect pressure and return lines from gear. Plug open lines and fittings to prevent contamination.
3. Disconnect brake line bracket attached to gear, if necessary.
4. Remove splash shield, if equipped, from flex coupling, then disconnect flex coupling from steering gear.
5. Raise and support vehicle.
6. Mark alignment for pitman shaft to sector shaft, then remove pitman arm attaching nut and washer.
7. Remove pitman arm from sector shaft using pitman arm puller tool No. T64P-3590-F or equivalent.
8. Support steering gear, then remove attaching bolts and lower gear from vehicle. On models equipped with manual transmission, it may be necessary to remove clutch release lever retracting spring to provide clearance for gear removal. Rearm airbag system.
