NOTE: Refer to the E40D Automatic Transmission Exploded View, when performing the following procedure.

1. Remove input shaft from transmission.
2. Mount transmission on suitable stand and thoroughly clean solenoid body connector area to avoid contamination. Rotate transmission until pan faces upward.
3. Remove transmission pan, then filter and seal assembly. Ensure seal is removed from bore.
4. Remove accumulator body and main control body from transmission.
5. Remove solenoid body by pushing up on solenoid body connector while lifting solenoid body.

Removing Solenoid Screen:






6. Remove solenoid screen by turning counterclockwise and pulling out, as shown in the Removing Solenoid Screen image.
7. Remove three reinforcing plate bolts. Electronic Pressure Control (EPC) ball is spring loaded under separator plate.

EPC Blow-Off Ball And Spring Location:






8. Remove separator plate and two gaskets, then remove EPC blow-off spring and ball.

Check Ball Locations, Units With 9 Rubber Check Balls:




Check Ball Locations, Units With 10 Rubber Check Balls And 1 Steel Check Ball:






9. Remove check balls from transmission case pockets. Due to design changes, the transmission may be equipped with 9 rubber check balls, as shown in the Units With 9 Rubber Check Balls image, or 10 rubber check balls and 1 steel check ball, as shown in the Units With 10 Rubber Check Balls And 1 Steel Check Ball image. Note number of check balls removed for use during assembly.
10. Remove servo snap ring, retaining plate, piston, rod assembly, and servo spring.

Removing Feed Bolts:






11. Remove and discard three feed bolts.
12. With bellhousing facing up, remove pump attaching bolts and washers. Discard washers.

Removing Front Pump:






13. Install tools No. T89T-70010-A and T59L-100-B, and remove pump.
14. Remove pump gasket and No. 7D014 thrust washer.
15. Lift out coast clutch assembly.
16. Remove needle bearing assembly No. 7E486, located between front pump and sun gear.
17. Remove large snap ring, then overdrive pressure plate and clutch pack. Tag parts for assembly reference.

Removing Overdrive Ring Gear:






18. Remove overdrive ring gear, center shaft assembly, and needle bearing assembly 7G178.

Installing Clutch Spring Compressor:






19. Install clutch spring compressor tool No. T89T-70010-F or equivalent into case. Torque center bolt to 65 in lbs.
20. Remove large snap ring, then loosen spring compressor center bolt and remove compressor tool.
21. Remove intermediate/overdrive cylinder assembly, then the intermediate return spring.
22. Remove center support, then thrust washer No. 7L326.
23. Remove intermediate pressure plate and clutch plates. Tag clutch plates for assembly reference.
24. Remove intermediate band.

Installing Clutch Replacer Tool:






25. Remove direct clutch, forward clutch, and shell using tool No. T89T-70010-E. Ensure hooks on tool crossbar are in notches on input shell.
26. Remove reverse snap ring, then reverse planetary carrier and two thrust washers No. 7D423.
27. Remove and discard output shaft snap ring.

Removing Ring Gear And Hub Assembly:






28. Remove ring gear/hub assembly and needle bearing assembly No. 7E413.
29. Remove reverse hub and one-way clutch assembly.
30. Remove reverse clutch snap ring, then reverse pressure plate and clutch pack. Tag parts for assembly reference.
31. With pan surface facing up, remove extension housing attaching bolts.
32. Remove wiring bracket, extension housing, and gasket.
33. Remove output shaft, park gear, and thrust washer No. 7B368.

Removing Reverse Clutch Inner Race Attaching Bolts:






34. Remove low-reverse one-way clutch inner race attaching bolts.

Removing Reverse Clutch And Return Spring:






35. Remove reverse clutch, return spring, and inner race.
36. Install reverse clutch pressure plate and snap ring.

Removing Reverse Clutch Piston:






37. Blow compressed air into reverse clutch feed port. This will blow out reverse clutch piston against pressure plate.
38. Remove snap ring, reverse clutch pressure plate, and piston from case.
39. With pan surface facing down, remove park pawl return spring, pin, and parking pawl from case.
40. Remove attaching bolts from parking rod guide plate, then Torx head bolt and parking pawl abutment.

Removing Manual Lever Roll-Pin:






41. Using tool No. T78P-3504-N, remove manual lever roll-pin from case.
42. Remove inner detent lever nut. Hold lever with crescent wrench to prevent strain on lever assembly.
43. Remove inner detent lever and parking pawl actuating rod assembly from manual lever.
44. Remove manual lever position sensor, manual lever, and seal.
45. If necessary, remove stub tube.
