Timing Chain: Service and Repair

Removal
1. Drain the cooling system and crankcase. Remove oil pan and radiator.
2. Crank the engine to the Top Dead Center (TDC) position for cylinder No. 1. Secure the timing chain tensioner with the clip and remove the chain.
3. Remove the cylinder front cover and water pump, the timing chain, Torx (R) bolt and camshaft sprocket. Refer to Timing Cover: Service and Repair.
4. Remove the crankshaft sprocket.

Installation
1. Ensure that the gear position slots on the camshaft and crankshaft still face each other. Both shafts should be in the Top Dead Center (TDC) position.

2. Align the position dowel on the back of the crankshaft sprocket with the slot on the crankshaft face. Then slide the gear onto the shaft, making sure that it seats tight against the crankshaft.
3. Feed the timing chain around the crankshaft sprocket and then around the camshaft sprocket. lnstall the camshaft sprocket together With the timing chain. Also ensure that the position dowel on the back of the slot in the camshaft is aligned during installation (in the TDC position).
4. Install the Torx (R) bolt for the camshaft gear and tighten to specification.
5. Install the cylinder front cover. Install the oil pan and radiator. Refer to Timing Cover: Service and Repair, and Engine Lubrication, Oil Pan: Service and Repair.
6. Fill and bleed the cooling system and crankcase.
7. Start the engine and adjust the ignition timing.
8. Operate the engine at fast idle and check all hose connections and gaskets for leaks.
