^ EEC IV QUICK TEST - SERVICE CODE 16 EXPERIENCED DURING KOEO VIP TEST - VEHICLES USED IN CANADA

^ WIRING - BATTERY GROUND CABLE TOO LONG - INTERACTION BETWEEN DRL AND EDIS MODULE/VRS SENSOR - VEHICLES USED IN CANADA

LIGHT TRUCK: 1990-91 RANGER 1991 EXPLORER

ISSUE: A service code 16 may be experienced during the KOEO (Key-On/Engine-Off) VIP test. This is caused by the battery ground cable being too long which creates an interaction between the Daytime Running Light (DRL) and the EDIS module/VRS sensor.

ACTION: Confirm the condition and install a shorter battery ground cable. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

INSPECTION AND IDENTIFICATION

1. Perform the KOEO (Key-On/Engine-Off) VIP Self Test with the parking brake OFF and the headlights OFF. This should produce a sequence like 16-10-11.

NOTE: DURING THE TEST, THE HEADLIGHTS WILL BE ILLUMINATED AT 40% INTENSITY (PER CANADIAN LAW FOR DAYTIME DRIVING).

2. Set the parking brake and rerun the KOEO VIP Self Test. The headlights will be off with the parking brake set during this test. The codes should now be 11-10-11.

3. Check the battery cable to see that it shows a 10 gauge wire running along the negative battery cable from the frame ground to the chassis ground at G101 (body ground near the negative battery post). This cable will only have three wires connected directly at the negative battery clamp.

BATTERY GROUND CABLE REPLACEMENT

1. Remove the battery ground cable assembly and engine block heater wire, if so equipped.

2. Install a new battery ground cable (F1TZ-14301-C).

NOTE: ON THE NEW CABLE, THE CHASSIS GROUND WIRE COMES DIRECTLY FROM THE NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE AND ATTACHES TO THE CHASSIS IN THE ORIGINAL LOCATION.

3. After all electrical connections are secured and the engine block heater is connected (if so equipped), rerun the KOEO VIP Self Test with the parking brake OFF. The DRL's should be on and the codes should read 11-10-11.

4. Check other electrical components for proper operation (i.e., radio, fan and lights) to be certain that the cables were reconnected correctly.

NOTE: VERIFY THE OPERATION OF THE TAIL AND BRAKE LIGHTS TO BE SURE THAT THE FRAME GROUND CONNECTION IS GOOD.
