Removal and Installation

REMOVAL



1. Apply parking brake and place transmission in Neutral position.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
3. Remove bolt attaching intermediate shaft to steering column.
4. Using suitable tool, compress intermediate shaft until it clears steering column shaft.
5. On models with automatic transmission, remove attaching nuts then disconnect shift cable bracket and shift cable from steering column.
6. On all models, using suitable puller, remove steering wheel from shaft. When servicing a tilt column, the steering wheel must be in the full Up position when removed.
7. On models with tilt columns, remove lever, then steering the column collar by pressing on collar from top and bottom while removing collar.
8. On all models, remove retaining screws and trim panel.
9. Remove attaching screws from bottom of steering column shroud, then remove bottom half of shroud by pulling down and toward rear of vehicle.
10. On models with automatic transmission, remove shift lever cable.
11. On all models, remove top half of shroud from column.
12. On automatic transmission columns, disconnect selector indicator actuation cable by removing screw from column and plastic plug at end of cable. To remove plastic plug from shift lever, push on nose of plug until the head clears casting.
13. On all models, disconnect plastic clip which holds multi-function switch, then remove leaving electrical connectors attach and position aside.
14. Disconnect key warning buzzer and horn brush wire, then remove connector from column.
15. Remove attaching screws that hold toe plate to dash panel. Loosen toe plate clamp bolt.
16. Support column and remove bolt holding breakaway bracket to pedal support bracket.
17. Pry apart locking tabs, then disconnect ignition switch wiring harness.
18. Remove steering column from vehicle.

INSTALLATION



1. On models with automatic transmission, install shift cable bracket. Torque to 13-22 ft. lbs.
2. On all models, connect ignition switch wiring harness to column connector.
3. Loosely install bolts that hold breakaway bracket to pedal support bracket.
4. Torque bolts that hold toe plate to vehicle floor to 5-8 ft. lbs.
5. Torque breakaway bracket to pedal support bracket to 19-27 ft. lbs.
6. Torque toe plate clamp to 5.9-13.3 ft. lbs.
7. Install horn brush connector, torque attaching screw to 21-29 inch lbs., then attach key warning buzzer wire connector to horn brush wire.
8. Position multi-function switch on column and torque attaching screws to 18-26 inch lbs., then connect plastic clip.
9. On automatic transmission columns, connect selector indicator actuation cable by pushing the plastic plug at end of cable into shift lever socket casting. Nose of plug should be facing steering wheel.
10. On all models, install cable retaining screw and adjust.
11. On vehicles with automatic transmission, install and adjust shift lever cable.
12. On all models, attach trim shrouds on column and install retaining screws.
13. On tilt wheel columns, install steering column collar and tilt lever, then torque tilt lever to 2.2-3.6 ft. lbs..
14. On all models, place automatic transmission selector in Neutral.
15. Install steering wheel, torque to 23-33 ft. lbs., then install lower trim panel.
16. On models with automatic transmission, connect shift cable and linkage.
17. On all models, connect intermediate shaft to steering column. Torque to 25-35 ft. lbs.
18. Connect battery ground cable and release parking brake.
