Engine: Service and Repair

1. Remove engine cover, then disconnect battery cables and drain cooling system.
2. Remove grille assembly, including gravel deflector.
3. On models with EFI, remove bolts that secure the air cleaner and bracket assembly, then disconnect thermactor air pump inlet hose from front of the air cleaner housing.
4. On models with EFI, disconnect the air outlet tube assembly from the throttle body, the air inlet tube from the air cleaner and the thermactor bypass valve hose from the air inlet tube.
5. On all models, remove air cleaner assembly and the air inlet and outlet tubes.
6. Remove upper grille support bracket, hood lock support and condenser upper mounting brackets.
7. On models equipped with A/C, discharge refrigerant from system and remove condenser. Disconnect lines from A/C compressor and remove accelerator cable bracket.
8. Disconnect heater hoses from engine.
9. Disconnect upper and lower radiator hoses and transmission oil cooler lines (if equipped). On models equipped with oil cooler, disconnect cooling lines at oil filter adapter. Do not attempt to remove the line at the quick disconnect fitting at the cooler as damage to the cooler or connectors may result.
10. Remove fan shroud, fan and radiator and A/C condenser, then pivot alternator inward and disconnect electrical connectors from alternator.
11. On carbureted models, remove air cleaner, duct and valve assembly and exhaust manifold shroud, then the flex tube from exhaust manifold stove.
12. Disconnect throttle and transmission linkage from carburetor, then remove accelerator cable bracket from engine. On models with EFI, disconnect throttle and transmission linkage from throttle body, then remove accelerator cable bracket from upper intake manifold.
13. On models equipped with speed control, remove speed control servo vacuum line and cable.
14. On carbureted models, disconnect fuel and choke lines, then remove carburetor and spacer.
15. On models with EFI, disconnect fuel lines at quick disconnect couplings and vacuum lines to the intake manifold.
16. Disconnect EGR tube from left exhaust manifold and upper intake manifold, then plug manifold opening.
17. Raise and support vehicle.
18. Drain engine oil and remove oil filter.
19. Disconnect exhaust pipes from exhaust manifolds. On models with EFI, disconnect exhaust air supply bypass valve hose from MTA check valve, then disconnect EGR tube from left exhaust manifold and upper intake manifold, then plug manifold opening.
20. On all models, remove two transmission filler tube bracket attaching bolts from right cylinder head.
21. Remove engine mount attaching bolts and nuts, then the starter motor.
22. Remove converter inspection cover bolts, four converter-to-flex plate nuts, three adapter plate-to-converter housing bolts and four converter housing-to-cylinder block lower bolts.
23. Remove ground wire retaining bolt from cylinder block, then lower the vehicle.
24. On models equipped with power steering, remove steering pump drive belt and front bracket bolts.
25. On all models, disconnect one vacuum line from rear of intake manifold.
26. Disconnect engine wiring harness and position aside.
27. On models equipped with A/C, disconnect A/C compressor magnetic clutch electrical connector.
28. On all models, install lifting bracket to intake manifold and remove two converter housing-to-cylinder block upper attaching bolts.
29. Support transmission with a suitable jack and attach lifting equipment to engine, then carefully move engine forward and lift from vehicle.
30. Reverse procedure to install. Tighten engine to transmission bolts to specifications.
