ISSUE: Unsatisfactory engine performance or hard starting after a short hot soak in high ambient temperatures or while the truck is under heavy load may be caused by the strategy of the EEC IV processor. The processor strategy can cause spark retraction as the engine operating temperature rises. The rise in engine operating temperature on certain applications may be attributed to inadequate coolant flow caused by the thermostat. Thermactor silencers must be replaced on certain applications to prevent restricted thermactor dump air flow.

ACTION: Install a new EEC IV processor with revised operating strategy. Also install the other prescribed service parts listed in the application chart that follows. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

NOTE: INSTALL ALL OF THE SERVICE PARTS PACKAGED IN THE KIT. FAILURE TO INSTALL ALL OF THE SERVICE PARTS WILL RESULT IN AN INEFFECTIVE REPAIR.

1. Perform an EEC IV Quick Test. Correct service code(s) as required.
2. Check and reset base timing to 10~ BTC, if required.

3. Obtain the correct service kit for the unit. Refer to the following service part application chart.

4. Remove the existing EEC IV processor.

5. Install the new EEC IV processor from the kit.

6. For service kits that include thermostats, install the new thermostat.

7. For service kits that include thermactor silencers and brackets, install the thermactor silencer and bracket.

Obtain an Authorized Modifications Decal and list the date, dealer number, and summary of alterations performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal. Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
