ISSUE: High steering efforts may result because some Bendix power steering gears have relief pressures set at or below minimum specification. A pressure adjustment service kit (E8HZ-3K604-A) is now available to adjust the relief pressure of a Bendix gear to the upper limit of its specification without removing the gear from the vehicle. This kit consists of...

^ Three (3) adjusting shims of various thickness.

^ A replacement sealing washer.

^ A concise instruction sheet.

ACTION: Install a pressure adjustment service kit (EBHZ-3K604-A) using the kit's instruction sheet. Refer to the 1991 F-FT-B-600-700-800 Truck Shop Manual, Page 13-46-7 (F-Series with 10-12K front axles) and Pages 13-48-26/27 (F/B-Series with 6-9K front axles), for relief pressure specifications and service details.

It should be noted that this action will optimize the output of the steering gear only. Properly adjusting the steering gear pressure relief valve will make the system more sensitive to marginal pump pressure/flow output at idle.


If the vehicle has inadequate power steering assist after the steering gear pressure relief valve is properly adjusted, the pump performance and idle speed should be checked in accordance with the Ford Truck Shop Manual.
