STEERING - LIGHT EFFORT, FEEL OR WANDER


LIGHT TRUCK: 1989-91 F-53


ISSUE: Light steering effort, lack of on-center feel or wander may occur. These conditions may be caused by loose, worn/broken front end suspension components or too much power assist built into the production installed steering gear assembly.

ACTION: Check to see if the service procedures covered in TSB 90-23-12 have been performed. If necessary, install a new power steering gear assembly. Refer to the following procedure for service details.


1. Check the tire pressure and inflate the tires to proper specification. Evaluate the vehicle's steering operation prior to any repairs.


2. Determine if TSB 90-23-12 has been performed on the vehicle. If it has been completed within the last 5000 miles, go to Step # 4 of this procedure and replace the power steering gear assembly.

3. Perform the repair procedures in TSB 90-23-12. Determine if the condition has been corrected. If not, replace the power steering gear assembly.

4. Remove the power steering gear assembly. Refer to the 1989/91 Light Truck Shop Manual, Sections 13-48 or 11-02B, for service details.


NOTE: THE F53 MOTORHOME DIFFERS SLIGHTLY FROM THE SHOP MANUAL SKETCH IN THAT THE STEERING GEAR IS MOUNTED TO AN OFFSET BOX ON THE FRAME RATHER THAN DIRECTLY TO THE FRAME. THIS DOES NOT AFFECT REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION PROCEDURE.

5. Install a new power steering gear assembly (F1TZ-3504-B) per the Shop Manual procedure.

CAUTION: EARLIER DESIGN LEVEL STEERING GEARS CANNOT BE USED.

6. Ensure that the power steering system is properly filled and bled.

7. Check clear vision and reset if necessary.


8. Check to ensure that the condition has been corrected.
