Pitman Arm - High Steering Efforts In Right Hand Turn
Article No.93-1-15
01/05/93
^ STEERING - HIGH STEERING EFFORTS IN RIGHT HAND TURN ONLY
^ STEERING - UNEQUAL NUMBER OF STEERING WHEEL TURNS FROM RIGHT-TO-LEFT TURNING RADIUS
LIGHT TRUCK:
1989-92 F-53
ISSUE:
High steering efforts may be experienced in right hand turns only and/or there may be an unequal number of steering wheel turns (fewer to right) from right-to-left turning radius. This may occur because of limited Pitman arm angle tolerance.
ACTION:
Install a new Pitman arm with greater angle tolerance and, if necessary, adjust the left turn steering gear poppet.
INSPECTION
With the vehicle setting on the turn plates of the front end alignment equipment, proceed as follows:
1. Turn the steering wheel to the right until the steering goes manual.
2. Record right front wheel turn angle.
a. If 34~ or more, stop here (34-40~ is normal within the tolerance of the steering gear).
b. If 33~ or less, continue with the service procedure.
ALTERNATE INSPECTION METHOD
With vehicle setting on the floor, proceed as follows:
1. Turn the steering wheel to the right until the steering goes into the manual mode.
2. Measure the distance from the steering stop on the spindle to the front axle 1-beam, Figure 1.
a. If less than 3/4", stop here. This is normal within the tolerance of the steering gear.
b. If 3/4" or more, continue with the service procedure.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Replace the existing Pitman arm with a new one (E9TZ-3590-C). Refer to the 1992 F-Super Duty Service Manual, Section 11-03, for service details.
2. Record right and left turn angles when the steering goes into the manual mode. The right turn should now be about 70 more than it was before.
3. If the alternate method of measuring the stop to axle was used, the measured dimension should be about 3/4" less than it was before.
NOTE:
THE LEFT TURN STEERING GEAR POPPET WILL NOW REQUIRE ADJUSTMENT AS FOLLOWS:
a. Remove the rubber seal that covers the poppet adjusting screw on the bottom of the steering gear, Figure 1.
b. Insert a blade type screwdriver and turn the adjusting screw 3 turns clockwise.
c. Start the engine and rotate the steering wheel through a left turn.
d. Record the left turn angle at poppet relief.
e. If 40~ is achieved and the spindle turn stop is just off the I-beam, reinstall the rubber poppet adjusting screw cover.
f. If 40~ is not obtained and the stop is not contacting the I-beam, continue to turn the screw clockwise to reach 40~ or I-beam contact.
g. If I-beam contact occurs, stop and turn the screw 1/8 turn counterclockwise.
h. Recheck for contact. If no contact is observed, reinstall the rubber poppet adjusting screw cover.
i. Road test the vehicle and reset clear vision.
