STEERING GEAR - POWER - LEAKS - REVISED SEALING PROCEDURE

LIGHT TRUCK: 1988-91 F-53, F-59

Figure 1:

ISSUE: Power steering fluid may leak around the threads of the valve nut surrounding the input shaft, Figure 1. This occurs because of a lack of sealant or improperly applied sealant.

ACTION: If service is required, use minor seal service kit (E8HZ-3L548-D) along with Loctite 242 and Primer N to correct this leakage.

CAUTION: BOTH THE MINOR SEAL SERVICE KIT (E8HZ-3LS48-D) AND LOCTITE 242/PRIMER N MUST BE USED.

NOTE: THE 1992 STEERING GEARS (ENGINEERING PART NUMBERS F2HT-3N503-BA AND F2HT-3N503-CA) USE AN O-RING TYPE SEAL AND THIS PROCEDURE DOES NOT APPLY.

Loctite 242 and Primer N are available from your local Loctite distributor. Call 1-800-243-4874 for assistance in locating the Loctite distributor in your area.

The minor seal maintenance kit (E8HZ-3L548-D) includes instructions for resealing the power steering gear.

NOTE: A SPECIAL SERVICE TOOL, (D89T-12458-R OR BENDIX # 106234) SPANNER WRENCH, IS REQUIRED TO REMOVE/INSTALL THE VALVE NUT.

It is available from Owatonna Tool Co., Tool-free telephone number: 1-800-533-5338.

The Service Manual contains an error. It should read as follows: When using spanner wrench (D89T-12458-R) to obtain the specified torque of 221-257 lb.ft. (300-348 N-m), the torque wrench setting should be 167-194 lb.ft. (226-263 N-m). This torque is based on a spanner wrench length of 6-1/4" (159 mm) and a torque wrench length of 19-3/8" (492 mm).
