TRANSMISSION - E40D - DELAYED INITIAL FORWARD ENGAGEMENTS - VEHICLES BUILT PRIOR TO 5/20/91
LIGHT TRUCK: 1990 F-53 1990-91 BRONCO, ECONOLINE, F-150-350 SERIES, F-47
ISSUE: A delayed initial forward engagement of 5-20+ seconds may be experienced intermittently on a cold start drive away. This occurs because the teflon seal rings on the forward clutch hub fail to seat or energize properly. This condition most often happens after extended driving of 60 miles or more, followed by extended cold soak. This condition should not be confused with converter drainback as described in TSB 90-18-11 and 91-7-14. Please note, this only effects vehicles built prior to 5/20/91.
ACTION: Replace the teflon seal rings with cast iron seal rings (C6AZ-7D019-A). Refer to the 1990/91 Econoline, F-Series, Bronco Service Manual, Section 17-09, for service details.
Also, inspect the forward clutch cylinder assembly (E9TZ-7A360-A) seal ring groove and mating bore in center support (E9TZ-7A130-B) for excessive wear or damage and, if necessary, replace them as required.
