ISSUE:
The torque converter may go into a lock up mode in second gear. This gives a feeling of "lack of power" or "hesitation" when driving in mountainous or hilly terrain. This condition is most noticeable when pulling a trailer or hauling heavy loads up an incline. This concern is caused by the strategy of the EEC-IV processor.





ACTION:
Install a new EEC-IV processor. Refer to the following EEC-IV Processor Application Chart for correct parts usage. If the vehicle does not have an auxiliary transmission cooler, install a service cooler (48 plate) to prevent transmission damage.





Refer to the 1990/91 F-Series and Bronco Service Manual, Section 07-01A, and Figures 1 and 2 of this article for installation procedure.





AUXILIARY TRANSMISSION COOLER

The following Auxiliary Transmission Cooler Chart shows the trucks needing installation of an auxiliary transmission cooler by rear axle ratio.





Obtain an Authorized Modifications Decal and list the date, dealer number, and summary of alterations performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal. Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
