Apply parking brake to keep both rear wheels from turning. Mount a dial indicator Tool D78P-4201-B on the carrier housing with the indicator point positioned to contact the pinion yoke 38.1 mm (1-1/2 inch) from the center line of the pinion shaft.

With the transmission in neutral and engine not running, check the total rotational movement of the pinion yoke. If the total reading on the dial indicator is 1.9mm (0.075 inch) or less, the axle backlash is within allowable limits.
