Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair
1. Remove intake manifold.2. Remove rocker arm covers.
3. If removing right cylinder head, perform the following steps:
a. Remove the alternator and air pump mounting bracket bolt and pivot alternator downward.
b. On Econoline models, remove ignition coil and air cleaner inlet duct from cylinder head.
4. On all models, if removing left cylinder head, perform the following steps:
a. On models with Air Conditioning (A/C), remove A/C compressor bracket attaching bolts.
b. On F-Series models, remove oil dipstick and tube assembly and speed control bracket, if equipped.
5. On all models, disconnect exhaust pipes from exhaust manifolds.
6. Loosen rocker arm studs or bolts and remove push rods in sequence so they may be installed in their original positions.
7. On Econoline models, remove Thermactor air supply manifold, hose and pump valve as an assembly.
8. On Bronco and F-Series models, disconnect Thermactor air supply hoses from check valves and plug the valves.
9. On all models, remove cylinder head attaching bolts and the cylinder head.
10. Reverse procedure to install.
11. Depending on whether the head bolts are flanged hex head bolts or standard hex head bolts (see illustration), tighten cylinder head attaching bolts in sequence to:
For all Non-Flanged Standard Hex Head bolts:
a. First Step to 75-88 Nm (55-65 ft-lbs).
b. Second Step to 88-98 Nm (65-72 ft-lbs).
For all Flanged Torque-To-Yield Hex Head bolts:
a. First Step to 34-47 Nm (25-35 ft-lbs).
b. Second Step to 61-75 Nm 45-55 ft-lbs).
b. Third Step an additional 1/4 turn (85-95 degrees).
