REMOVAL1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove transmission dipstick, then place selector in Neutral position.
3. Raise and support vehicle.
4. On 4WD models, remove front driveshaft.
5. On all models, remove rear driveshaft.
6. Disconnect shift linkage or cable.
7. On 4WD models, remove shift linkage from transfer case shift lever.
8. On all models, remove manual lever position sensor connector.
CAUTION: Do not pry tab with screwdriver.
9. Remove solenoid body connector heat shield, then disconnect solenoid body connector.
10. On 4WD models, remove four-wheel drive switch connector from transfer case.
11. On all models, pry wire harness locator from extension housing wire bracket.
12. On 4WD models, remove wire harness locators from lefthand side of crossmember.
13. On all models, disconnect speedometer cable, then remove lower converter cover attaching bolts.
14. Remove rear engine cover plate attaching bolts.
15. Disconnect starter cables, then remove starter from vehicle.
16. Rotate crankshaft bolt to gain access to converter nuts, then remove four converter retaining nuts.
17. Raise transmission using a suitable jack and safety chain.
18. Loosen rear transmission mounting pad nuts, then remove retaining bolts and crossmember from transmission.
19. Disconnect oil cooler lines from transmission. Cap cooling lines and plug fittings at transmission.
20. Remove bellhousing attaching bolts, then back out converter from flywheel and lower transmission from vehicle.
21. Remove converter housing and transmission filler tube.
22. On 4WD models, remove transfer case vent hose from detent bracket and transfer case from transmission.
INSTALLATION
1. reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Ensure converter is fully seated by placing straightedge across bellhousing. There must be a gap between converter pilot face and straightedge.
b. Torque bellhousing bolts alternately to 40-50 ft lbs.
c. Install new converter-to-flywheel studs and torque to 20-30 ft lbs.
