Fuel Delivery and Air Induction: Description and Operation

AIR INTAKE SYSTEM

Air Cleaner And Fresh Air Duct:

Fresh air is drawn through the air filter into the intake manifold. The intake manifold distributes the air to the combustion chamber where it is compressed. When the piston reaches the proper position on the compression stroke, a metered amount of diesel fuel is injected into the cylinder. As the fuel burns it produces power and exhaust gases. The exhaust gases are expelled through the exhaust manifold into the muffler and exhaust piping.

FUEL SYSTEM

Fuel Flow:

Fuel is drawn from the fuel tank by the fuel supply pump and routed to the combination fuel filter/water separator. From the fuel filter assembly the fuel goes to the injection pump. The injection pump pressurizes the fuel and delivers it to the injection nozzles. The injection pump is responsible for delivering the fuel to the injectors at the proper time, and in the proper quantity. The fuel injection lines are designed so fuel travels the same distance between the pump and injectors for each cylinder. This maintains accurate pressure and timing for all the injectors. Excess fuel from the injection pump and injectors is routed back to the fuel tank by return fuel lines.

The fuel system consists of the fuel supply pump, fuel injection pump, fuel supply and return lines, injection lines, in-line pressure sensor, and fuel filter/heater/water separator.
