LIGHT TRUCK: 1992 AEROSTAR, BRONCO, ECONOLINE, EXPLORER, F SUPER DUTY, F-150-350 SERIES, RANGER

ISSUE: Front end alignment on light trucks may occasionally require adjustment.

ACTION: Information about the service parts available to provide the adjustments and service setting objectives is featured in this TSB article. If the Light Truck Service Manual diagnostics indicate the need for front alignment adjustment, use the following caster/camber adjustment parts and alignment specifications to make the adjustment.

Except for 1992 F-350 4x4 models which use a new alignment system that is detailed in this article, refer to the appropriate Light Truck Service Manual for service details.

The 1992 Model - Alignment Service Parts Chart, Figure 1, and the Caster/Camber Parts Information Chart, Figure 2, provide correct parts usage for each type of vehicle. Select the appropriate parts group from these charts and use the Caster/Camber Parts Information Chart to order the parts required.

The 1992 Alignment Service Settings Objectives Chart, Figure 3, has been created to give optimum settings to set alignments when Service Manual diagnostics indicate adjustment is required to resolve an alignment concern.

The Average Camber And Caster Settings Chart, Figure 4, provides normal operating ranges for nominal caster and camber. If nominal caster and camber are within the specified range, but a drift concern is noted, adjust caster and camber side to side splits to those specified in the 1992 Alignment Service Setting Objectives Chart.

CAMBER/CASTER ADJUSTMENT - 1992 F-350 4X4 DANA MODEL 60 FRONT DRIVE AXLE

^ Camber is determined by the axle housing machining during manufacture and is not adjustable.

^ Caster adjustment is provided by means of a series of interchangeable mounting sleeves for the upper ball joints stud.

Service slugs are available for adjustments of + 0.5~ and +/- 0.75~ for both LH and RH sides. This provides adjustment capability of up to 1.50, in 1/4~ increments starting at 1/2~. These slugs may also be used to adjust nominal caster if required.

NOTE:
REFER TO THE 1992 ALIGNMENT SERVICE SETTING OBJECTIVES CHART, FIGURE 3 IN THIS TSB, FOR THE APPROPRIATE ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS BEFORE ADJUSTMENT.

1. Measure the alignment with available alignment equipment.

2. Raise the vehicle on a hoist and remove the front wheel.

3. Remove the upper ball joint cotter pin and nut.

4. Loosen the lower ball joint nut to the end of the stud.

5. Strike the inside of the spindle near the upper and lower ball joints to break the spindle loose from the ball joint studs.

6. Remove the caster adjusting sleeve.

7. Install the required service adjuster.

NOTE:
THE MAGNITUDE OF THE CASTER CHANGE FOR EACH SERVICE SLUG IS PRINTED ON THE TOP OF THE SLUG. PRECISE ADJUSTMENTS ARE POSSIBLE. FOR EXAMPLE, SLUG (F2TZ-3B440-A) HAS R +30', L-30' STAMPED ON TOP OF THE SLUG. THIS SLUG WOULD YIELD A CASTER INCREASE OF 1/20~ (30') IF INSTALLED ON THE RH SIDE AND A DECREASE OF 1/20~ CASTER IF INSTALLED ON THE LH SIDE. SLUGS ARE AVAILABLE TO BOTH INCREASE AND DECREASE CASTER ON BOTH THE RIGHT HAND AND LEFT HAND.

8. Remove the lower ball stud nut and apply Loctite 242 or equivalent to the lower stud.

9. Partially tighten the lower nut to 35 lb ft (47 N-m).

10. Install the new upper nut and tighten to 65 lb ft (88 N-m). Advance to the next castellation and install a new cotter pin.

11. Finish tightening the lower nut to 140-160 lb ft (190-217 N-m).

CAUTION:
FAILURE TO FOLLOW THE TORQUE SEQUENCE SPECIFIED IN STEPS 8 TO 11 CAN RESULT IN EXCESSIVE SPINDLE TURNING TORQUES, POOR STEERING RETURNABILITY OR UPPER BALL JOINT FAILURE.

12. Reinstall the wheel and lower the vehicle.

13. Check caster and toe per the alignment procedure.
