Aluminum Wheels - Stick to Brake Rotor
Article No.92-20-9
WHEELS - ALUMINUM - "STUCK 99 TO BRAKE ROTOR - VEHICLES BUILT THROUGH 7/17/92
LIGHT TRUCK:
1992 ECONOLINE
ISSUE:
The aluminum wheel may stick on the front brake rotor under certain conditions of salt, humidity and time. This sticking condition can be caused by the aluminum wheel not draining properly, causing corrosion around the center locating pilot of the wheel and the rotor.
ACTION:
Remove all four tire and wheel assemblies from the vehicle and clean the wheel and mounting surface. Refer to the following procedure for service details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
The front tire and wheel assemblies may be difficult to remove and may require above normal force to detach from the rotor assembly. If this occurs, place a board across the backside of the tire and strike the board with a hammer.
CAUTION:
AVOID DAMAGING THE TIRE AND WHEEL ASSEMBLIES DURING REMOVAL. DAMAGE TO THE TIRE AND WHEEL ASSEMBLY COULD CAUSE ERRATIC OPERATION. IF THE WHEELS ARE DAMAGED, REPLACE THEM. DO NOT INSTALL DAMAGED WHEELS ON THE VEHICLE.
1. Set the tire and wheel assembly, inboard side up - curb side down, on a non-scratch surface. Refer to Figure 1.
NOTE:
DO NOT REMOVE TIRE AT ANY TIME DURING THIS PROCEDURE.
2. Clean the wheel mounting surface, the center pilot bore and the galvanic bore with a cloth dampened with naphtha or equivalent. Remove any loose dirt or corrosion. Refer to Figure 2.
CAUTION:
BE CAREFUL NOT TO GET ANY OF THE CLEANING SOLUTION ON THE COSMETIC SURFACE OF THE WHEEL. THE CLEANING SOLUTION COULD CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE CLEAR COATED SURFACE OF THE WHEEL.
3. Place a rat tail file on the outer edge of the mounting surface adjacent to one of five lightener pockets. The file should be centered on the lightener pocket. Hold the file at approximately 10 degrees from horizontal angle with the file motion from the center of the wheel outward toward the wheel rim. Refer to Figure 3.
4. Using a back and forth motion, file a "U" shaped notch into the outer mounting surface diameter approximately 3 to 6 mm deep or half the depth of the file diameter. Refer to Figure 4.
5. Repeat this procedure on the remaining four lightener pockets. Refer to Figure 3.
6. When all five notches have been cut, use the file to remove any burrs from the mounting surface that may have been left by the repair procedure. Refer to Figure 5.
NOTE:
BURRS ON THE MOUNTING SURFACE COULD CAUSE CONCERN WITH RETAINING CLAMP LOAD IN OPERATION.
7. Clean all aluminum filings from all surfaces of the wheel.
8. Reinstall and torque wheels according to Service Manual procedure.
NOTE:
DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, USE ANY GREASES OR LUBRICANTS ON THE WHEEL MOUNTING SURFACE, PILOT HOLE AND AXLE STUDS. IF THESE LUBRICANTS ARE PRESENT, REMOVE BY CLEANING BEFORE REMOUNTING THE ASSEMBLIES TO THE VEHICLE. THESE LUBRICATING MATERIALS COULD CAUSE LUG NUT TOROUE LOSS DURING OPERATION.
