Inspection

ROTOR TYPE PUMP



Fig. 36 Oil pump:







1. To disassemble, Fig. 36, remove cover, inner rotor and shaft assembly and outer race. Remove staking marks at relief valve chamber cap. Insert a self-threading sheet metal screw of proper diameter into oil pressure relief valve chamber cap and pull cap out of chamber. Then remove spring and plunger.
2. To assemble, install pressure relief valve plunger, spring and a new cap. Stake cap in place. Install outer race, inner rotor and shaft. Be sure identification dimple mark on outer race is facing outward and on the same side as dimple on rotor. Inner rotor and shaft and outer race are furnished only as a unit. One part should not be replaced without replacing the other.
3. Install pump cover

EXCEPT ROTOR TYPE


1. Inspect inside of pump housing and inner and outer gears for damage or excessive wear.
2. Inspect pump cover surface for excessive wear, minor scuff marks are normal.
3. Inspect rotor for nicks, burrs or score marks, remove minor imperfections with suitable oil stone.
4. Using suitable feeler gauge, inspect inner and outer rotor tip clearance, Fig. 37.
5. With rotor installed, place suitable straightedge over rotor assembly and housing, measure rotor endplay between straightedge and inner rotor and outer race, Fig. 38, clearance should not exceed .005 inch.
6. Inspect relief valve spring for collapse or wear.
7. Inspect relief valve for free operation.

NOTE: Internal components are not serviceable, if any component is not within specifications, replace pump assembly.
