FUEL - NEW STYLE FUEL PUMP - SERVICE TIP
LIGHT TRUCK:
1992-96 ECONOLINE
This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to revise the service procedure.
ISSUE:
A new style fuel pump with a jumper harness to replace the previous style pump has been released for service.
ACTION:
When it becomes necessary to replace the fuel pump, replace the pump with a new style pump and jumper harness. Refer to the following Service Procedure for replacement procedures.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Remove the fuel pump and sender from the fuel tank. Refer to the appropriate Econoline Service Manual, Section 10, for details.
2. Cut off the fuel pump pigtail connector from the body side harness. Peel back the convolute tubing from the wires and cut the tubing back 51 mm (2").
3. Strip the insulation 12 mm (0.5") on each wire and install Heat Shrink Tubing (F5AZ-14A099-AA) over each wire.
4. Solder the new jumper harness (included with the pump and sender) matching the wire colors listed in the Wire Color Matching Chart. Use heat shrink tubing over all soldered connections.
NOTE:
HEAT SHRINK TUBING MUST BE USED OVER ALL SOLDERED CONNECTIONS. USE SUFFICIENT TUBING (ABOUT 51 mm/2") OF THE SPECIFIED TYPE TO ENTIRELY COVER EACH SOLDERED CONNECTION. SHRINK APPROPRIATELY TO PREVENT EXPOSURE OF THE CONNECTIONS.
WARNING:
ALL SOLDERING MUST BE DONE AWAY FROM THE FUEL TANK AREA. USE A SOLDERING IRON ONLY.
5. Install the fuel pump and sender into the fuel tank. New service part will protrude above tank opening approximately 20 mm (1"). The new installed part will need to be compressed into place against the fuel tank gasket, then secured into place. Refer to the appropriate Econoline Service Manual, Section 10, for details. Plug in the pump and vehicle harness connectors securely with each other.
NOTE:
THE NEW TURBINE PUMP/SENDER ASSEMBLIES ARE ONLY AVAILABLE WITH THREE (3) FUEL TUBES. IF THE VEHICLE DOES NOT REQUIRE THE AUXILIARY PORT TUBE, LEAVE THE SHIPPING CAP ON THE THIRD TUBE WHEN IT IS INSTALLED INTO THE VEHICLE.
NOTE:
THE NEW STYLE PUMP AND SENDER IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH CURRENT SERVICE FUEL PUMP OR SENDER COMPONENTS. IT MUST BE SERVICED AS AN ASSEMBLY ONLY.
