Antitheft and Alarm Systems: Description and Operation

PURPOSE
The anti-theft system provides two types of vehicle protection:

The first provides the vehicle with protection from unauthorized entry into the passenger compartment by monitoring the front, side, and rear doors; the hood is monitored to prevent unauthorized entry into the engine compartment. This protection is provided when the system is armed by following normal vehicle exit procedures.

The second type of protection monitors the status of the ignition key lock cylinder. If the lock cylinder is forcibly removed, the alarm will trigger. This protection is provided automatically when the ignition is turned off and the key is removed, therefore it is not necessary to arm the system for ignition key lock monitoring.

OPERATION
The anti-theft system can be armed in one of two methods:

First Method for Arming System
1. Turn off ignition, remove key
2. Open vehicle door to exit (alarm indicator will start flashing).
3. Close all doors with doors unlocked (alarm indicator will turn off)
4. Press the LOCK button of the remote entry transmitter (alarm indicator will turn on and glow steadily).
5. After approximately 30 seconds the alarm indicator will turn off indicating that the system is armed.

Second Method For Arming System
1. Turn off ignition, remove key.
2. Open vehicle door to exit (alarm indicator will start flashing).
3. Lock doors using power door locks or by pressing LOCK on the remote entry transmitter (alarm indicator will glow steadily).
4. Close all doors. After approximately 30 seconds the alarm indicator will turn off indicating that the system is armed.

Triggering The System
The alarm can be triggered by any one of the following events if the system has not been disarmed first:
1. Open any door (including the rear door or sliding door).
2. Open the hood.
3. Tamper with the ignition lock cylinder.

When triggered, the anti-theft protection system sounds the horn and flashes the low beam headlamps, park lamps, and anti-theft warning indicator at a rate of approximately 80 cycles per minute for 30 minutes. In addition, the starting system is disabled. Once the alarm has been triggered, only a disarm event will shut off the alarm and allow the vehicle starting system to operate.

Disarming The System
An armed or triggered system can be disarmed by one of the three events listed:
1. Press the remote entry transmitter unlock button once.
2. Unlock a door with a key.
3. If the driver arms the system and remains in the vehicle, the untriggered system can be disarmed by inserting the key into ignition and turning the ignition switch to the "RUN" or "ACCY" position.
