This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to include other transmissions in addition to the A4LD.
ISSUE:
The position of the shift lever, shown on the PRNDL, may not always show the proper gear in the transmission. This could be caused by the transmission control cable assembly locking tab not being fully seated or secure in the cable body.
ACTION:
Inspect the position of the shift lever on the PRNDL. If it appears to be misadjusted, check the locking tab to be sure that it is fully seated in the cable body, Figure 1. The locking tab is available as a service part. It is not necessary to replace the shift cable assembly. Refer to the following procedure for service, details.
If the locking tab is not seated flush with the cable adjustor body, proceed as follows:
1. Remove the tab from the adjustor body with a pair of pliers.
NOTE:
TO PREVENT REMOVING THE CABLE BODY FROM THE TRANSMISSION BRACKET, HOLD THE CABLE WITH THE OTHER HAND WHILE PULLING OUT THE TAB. APPLY A FORCE OF ABOUT 15 TO 20 LBS., REFER TO FIGURE 2.
2. Replace the existing locking tab with a new locking tab. Refer to the Parts Block for correct parts usage.
3. Push the new lock tab into the cable adjustor only half way, Figures 3 and 4.
4. Adjust the shift system according to the service manual before fully seating the new locking tab.
NOTE:
BE SURE THE CABLE BODY IS SECURE IN THE TRANSMISSION BRACKET AFTER SERVICE IS COMPLETE. SEE FIGURE 4.
CAUTION:
IF THE LOCKING TAB WAS NOT FULLY SEATED, IT MAY HAVE TAKEN A PERMANENT SET. THEREFORE, DO NOT REUSE THE LOCKING TAB.
