This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to include stripped chassis models.
ISSUE:
1992 through 1994 cutaway vehicles and stripped chassis models may exhibit more body roll, sway and/or lower rear ride height when compared to 1991 and prior models. Previous models did not experience these concerns, as they were equipped with 8-leaf rear springs, providing greater roll dampening through increased inter-leaf friction. The affected 1992 through 1994 models are equipped with either 3-leaf, 4-leaf or 5-leaf rear springs, which have decreased roll dampening characteristics due to reduced interleaf friction.
ACTION:
Install the new 9-leaf spring which will increase interleaf spring friction and raise the rear of the vehicle 1.25" (32 mm). Refer to the following procedure for service details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Follow rear spring removal and installation procedures outlined in the appropriate model year Econoline Body/Chassis Service Manual, Section 04-02, to replace springs with the new springs.
NOTE:
DISCARD OLD SPRING U-BOLTS AND INSTALL THE NEW LONGER U-BOLTS (REQUIRED FOR THE 9-LEAF SPRING), REINSTALLING ORIGINAL NUTS.
NOTE:
REUSE ANY SPRING SPACERS THAT HAVE BEEN PROVIDED BY THE BODY BUILDER. THESE ARE USED TO LEVEL THE VEHICLE DUE TO UNEVEN WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION AND SHOULD BE RE-USED.
2. Tighten U-bolts to 150-210 lb.ft. (203-285 N-m).
NOTE:
REFER TO FIGURE 1 AND PARTS LIST FOR ADDITIONAL PARTS THAT MAY BE REQUIRED DUE TO DAMAGE WHEN REMOVED.
