Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
1. Remove intake manifold.
2. Remove rocker arm covers.
3. If removing right cylinder head, perform the following steps:
a. Remove the alternator and air pump mounting bracket bolt and pivot alternator downward.
4. If removing left cylinder head, perform the following steps:
a. On models with A/C, remove A/C compressor bracket attaching bolts.
b. Remove oil dipstick and tube assembly and speed control bracket, if equipped.
5. Disconnect exhaust pipes from exhaust manifolds.
6. Loosen rocker arm studs or bolts and remove pushrods in sequence so they may be installed in their original positions.
8. Disconnect thermactor air supply hoses from check valves and plug the valves, if equipped.
9. Remove cylinder head attaching bolts and the cylinder head.
10. Reverse procedure to install, tighten cylinder head attaching bolts as follows:

c. Using the sequence shown in Fig. 14, torque cylinder head attaching bolts in three steps; first to 85 ft lb., second to 95 ft lb., and finally to 105-112 ft lb.
