7.3L D.I. Turbo Diesel PCM Reprogramming or Replacement
TECHNICAL INSTRUCTIONS
NOTE
THOSE DEALERS WHO HAVE SBDS CAPABILITIES AND HAVE RECEIVED THE JULY, 1994 CD-ROM (OR SUBSEQUENT LEVELS IE. RED MONTHLY UP-DATES) ARE REQUIRED TO UP-DATE THEIR SBDS EQUIPMENT AND REPROGRAM THE PCM.
REPROGRAMMING INSTRUCTIONS
1. From the SBDS Main Menu, touch "Powertrain Toolbox".
2. Enter vehicle VIN. Touch "Continue".
3. From the "Electronic Engine Control" category, select "PCM Reprogramming". Touch "Continue".
4. Any applicable TSB's or Recalls will be displayed. Touch "Continue".
5. Follow the Hookup Screen instructions. Connect the D3-73 SBDS adapter to the J1962 OBD-II connector (located under the dash). Connect the SBDS battery cable leads to the vehicle battery. Make sure the key is ON. Touch "Continue".
6. At the next screen turn the key OFF as instructed. Insert the SBDS Calibration Update CD-ROM in the CD drive. Touch "Continue".
7. At the next screen, turn the key ON as instructed. Touch "Continue".
8. A screen may appear stating "A reprogramming error has occurred". This may happen because the calibration may not support the standard EEC-V communication protocol. Follow instructions as indicated. Touch "Continue".
9. At the next screen, turn the key ON as instructed. Touch "Continue".
10. The screen will display, "Ready to start PCM Reprogramming". Touch "Continue".
11. A FLASH update screen will appear showing a bar with percent complete.
12. When the bar reaches 100%, a screen will appear stating "Turn the key OFF". Touch "Continue".
13. A Screen will appear stating "SBDS has successfully completed PCM Reprogramming. Touch "Continue".

REPROGRAMMING INSTRUCTIONS
14. A screen display of the Authorized Modification Decal (FPS 8262 9/78) will appear. Fill out an Authorized Modification Decal (STAT 5941-2 for Canada) as displayed and attach it to a clean surface on the fan shroud. The Change Authority is 94S84. Place a clear overlay on the decal. Touch "Continue".
15. SBDS will print the log automatically. Attach the log to your file copy of the work order and retain.
16. Normally, SBDS performs KOEO self-test automatically. However, KOEO self-test is currently not supported on SBDS for this vehicle. Touching "Continue" will return you to the Main Menu. Instead, select "Menu". The vehicle is now ready to be released.

PCM REPLACEMENT

NOTE
THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM - 12A650) IS LOCATED IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT TO THE LEFT OF THE STEERING COLUMN.
1. Open hood. Disconnect the battery negative cables (2).
2. Disconnect the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) electrical connector by turning the 10 mm retaining bolt until the connector disengages from the PCM.
3. Remove the 2 nuts securing the PCM bezel to the dash panel. Remove the bezel.
4. Remove inner fender retaining screws from the wheel lip opening and one bolt from the rear corner. Reposition inner fender to allow removal of the PCM.
5. Remove PCM.
6. Position the new PCM in the dash panel opening.
7. Install bezel and 2 retaining nuts. Tighten to 3.7 +/- .6 N-m (32.5 +/- 5.5 in.lb.).
8. Connect PCM connector using the 10 mm bolt to fully engage the connector. Tighten to 4 N-m (32 in.lb.).
8. Position inner fender and reinstall retaining screws and bolt.
9. Connect battery negative cables (2).
10. Check installation by starting the engine.
11. Return vehicle to service
