Disassembly and Assembly
1. Disconnect battery positive terminal.

Engine Compartment Wiring:





2. Disconnect instrument panel wiring in engine compartment by loosening connector center bolt.
3. Remove right and left inside windshield side garnish mouldings.
4. Remove the engine Cover.
5. Remove left and center snap-in moulding on each side of the steering column.
6. Remove five screws and steering column opening cover.
7. Remove nine bolts and steering column opening reinforcement.

Instrument Panel Covers and Moulding:





8. Remove steering column shrouds.





9. Disconnect three wiring connectors at bottom of steering column.
10. Loosen retaining bolt and disconnect connector to ignition switch from steering column.
11. Remove two screws and right-hand side lower trim panel.
12. Remove right cowl side panel and left cowl side panel and disconnect the park brake wiring.
13. Remove three nuts attaching the parking brake control to the left-hand cowl side panel and lay assembly on front floor carpet. Do not disconnect cable.

Instrument Panel Wiring:





14. Disconnect wiring at right cowl side panel.
15. Disconnect radio antenna lead in cable at right cowl side panel.
16. Disconnect wiring connector at brake light switch.
17. Disconnect heater temperature cables and, if equipped, disconnect the air conditioner vacuum line connector on the right side of instrument panel.
18. Remove one bolt attaching the right side of instrument panel.
19. Remove one bolt attaching the center of instrument panel.
20. Remove one bolt attaching the center of the instrument panel below A/C register located at the center of instrument panel.
21. Remove pinch bolt from steering column lower steering column shaft. Compress extension shaft toward engine and separate it from the column U-joint.
22. Disconnect the transmission shift cable from the steering column.
23. Remove four bolts attaching left side of instrument panel to the cowl side panel.
24. Remove four screws attaching the top of the instrument panel.

NOTE: Steps 24, 25 and 26 require two technicians.

25. Support the instrument panel and pull rearward and disconnect any remaining wires or other components.
26. Carefully remove the instrument panel through the front door.
27. It replacing instrument panel, transfer all components to the replacement instrument panel.

28. For assembly, follow disassembly procedures in reverse order.

NOTE: When the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) relearns its adaptive strategy. The vehicle may need to be driven 10 miles or more to relearn the strategy.
