Instrument Cluster / Carrier: Description and Operation
The instrument cluster is centered above the steering column in the instrument panel. The instrument cluster provides information on vehicle operation. The gauges in the instrument cluster include:
- A temperature gauge which receives its signal from a temperature sensor located in the intake manifold.
- An oil pressure gauge which receives its signal from an oil pressure sending unit located on the left side of the engine near the oil filter.
- A voltmeter which receives its signal from the continuous battery voltage circuit 729 (R/W).
- A fuel gauge which receives its signal from the fuel pump in the fuel tank, incorporating fuel anti-slosh circuitry in the Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) in the logic board that is mounted on the top of the instrument cluster.
- A speedometer, with an odometer and a trip odometer, which receives its signal from the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS).
The instrument cluster also has instrument panel lamp socket and bulbs used for illumination and warning indicator lamps.
