Removal

Special Tools:

REMOVAL
1. Disconnect the battery ground cables.

WARNING: ON VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AN AUXILIARY BATTERY, BOTH THE NEGATIVE AND POSITIVE BATTERY CABLES MUST BE DISCONNECTED.

WARNING: ON VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 7.3L ENGINE, BOTH THE PRIMARY AND SECONDARY BATTERIES MUST BE DISCONNECTED.

2. Remove the air cleaner air intake duct assembly.

3. Remove the transmission fluid level indicator.
4. Remove the engine cover.

5. Remove the (A) nut and the (B) bolt. With a suitable drain pan properly positioned, separate the (C) fluid filler tube from the (D) short fluid inlet tube, and secure it aside.

6. Remove the transmission-to-engine retaining bolts.

NOTE: As the bolts are removed, note the length of each bolt for proper location during installation.

7. Raise and support the vehicle.
8. Remove the driveshaft.
9. Remove the transmission-mounted parking brake assembly (if so equipped).

10. Disconnect the shift cable at the transmission and position it aside.
11. Remove the starter motor.

12. Remove the 5 (A) bolts and the (B) flywheel inspection cover.

13. Remove and discard the torque converter-to-flywheel retaining nuts.

14. Secure the (A) High lift Transmission Jack with the (B) E40D Transmission Jack Adapter to the (C) transmission.

15. Remove the transmission support crossmember.
1. Remove the crossmember-to-frame retaining nuts.
2. Remove the stud brackets.
3. Support the transmission support crossmember.
4. Remove the (A) nuts and the (B) transmission support crossmember.

16. Loosen the (A) bolts and remove the (B) heat shield.

17. Disconnect the harness connectors at the (A) Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS), the (B) digital Transmission Range (TR) sensor and the (C) solenoid body. Position the (D) harness aside.

18. With a suitable drain pan property positioned, disconnect the fluid cooler tubes at the Cooler Bypass Valve (CBV). Plug all fittings and position the tubes aside.

19. Completely loosen the RH transmission-to-engine bolt.

NOTE: This bolt will remain in the converter housing due to proximity of the exhaust pipe.

20. Remove the LH transmission-to-engine bolt.

21. Remove the transmission from the vehicle.
1. Move the transmission extension housing with a slight side-to-side motion to separate the transmission from the engine and the torque converter from the flywheel.
2. Back the transmission, with the jack, out and away from the engine until the torque converter is clear of the flywheel.
3. Lower the transmission jack.
4. Remove the transmission from under the vehicle.

CAUTION: Use care while removing the transmission to avoid obstructions.

CAUTION: Do not use the cooler bypass valve as a handle. Damage to the cooler bypass valve assembly may occur or damage to the case may result.

CAUTION: If a safety strap is being used to hold the transmission to the High-Lift Transmission jack, place the strap behind the Cooler Bypass Valve (CBV) to prevent damage to the cooler bypass valve.

22. If required, remove the torque converter from the transmission.
1. Install the Torque Converter Handles and position them at 6 o'clock and 12 o'clock.
2. Carefully remove the (A) torque converter from the (B) transmission by pulling evenly on the handles.

WARNING: THE TORQUE CONVERTER IS VERY HEAVY.

NOTE: Fluid loss will occur when the torque converter is removed.
