Parking Brake System: Description and Operation

Parking Brake System Components:

WARNING:
- ASBESTOS FIBER DUST MAY BE PRESENT ON BRAKE AND CLUTCH ASSEMBLIES AND IS HAZARDOUS TO HEALTH IF INHALED. BRAKE AND CLUTCH ASSEMBLIES SHOULD BE CLEANED USING A VACUUM CLEANER RECOMMENDED FOR USE WITH ASBESTOS FIBERS SUCH AS BRAKE/CLUTCH/SERVICE VACUUM. THE BAG MUST BE LABELED PER OSHA INSTRUCTION, SEALED, AND THE TRASH HAULER NOTIFIED AS TO THE BAG'S CONTENTS.
- IF A VACUUM SUITABLE FOR ASBESTOS IS NOT AVAILABLE, CLEANING SHOULD BE DONE WET. IF DUST GENERATION IS STILL POSSIBLE, TECHNICIANS SHOULD WEAR GOVERNMENT-APPROVED TOXIC DUST PURIFYING RESPIRATORS. OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY ACT (OSHA) REQUIRES AREAS WHERE ASBESTOS DUST GENERATION IS POSSIBLE TO BE ISOLATED AND POSTED WITH WARNING SIGNS. ONLY TECHNICIANS PERFORMING BRAKE OR CLUTCH REPAIR SHOULD BE PRESENT IN THE AREA.

Parking Brake Components At Rear Wheels:

The parking brake system is actuated when the parking brake control is depressed. The parking brake control applies tension to the front parking brake cable and conduit, the parking brake intermediate cable, and the parking brake cable equalizer. The parking brake cable equalizer is coupled to the RH parking brake rear cable and conduit, and the LH parking brake rear cable and conduit. The respective rear brake assemblies are then applied.

The rear wheel disc brake assembly contains a cable actuated parking brake assembly.

If the parking brake control is not fully released, the parking brake signal switch will illuminate the brake warning light.

The parking brake signal switch is mounted on the parking brake control. The switch is held in place by a self-tapping screw and aligned with a locator pin.
