Connecting Rod Bearing Journal Clearance
1. Remove the connecting rod bearing cap.
NOTE: The crankshaft connecting rod journals must be within specification to check the connecting rod bearing journal clearance.
2. Position a piece of Plastigage (R) across the bearing surface.
3. Install and torque to specification, then remove the connecting rod bearing cap.
NOTE: Do not turn the crankshaft during this step.
4. Measure Plastigage (R) to get the connecting rod bearing journal clearance. Plastigage (R) should be smooth and flat. A changing width indicates a tapered or damaged connecting rod bearing or connecting rod.
NOTE: The old nuts and bolts are used for checking clearances. New nuts and bolts must be used for reassembly.
