Timing Cover: Service and Repair


1. Remove engine.
2. Remove thermostat bypass hose from water pump.
3. Remove heater hot water tube to water pump hose.
4. Disconnect crankshaft position sensor electrical connector and position engine control sensor wiring aside.
5. Remove crankshaft position sensor.

6. Install crankshaft damper remover tool No. T58P-6316-D or equivalent on crankshaft vibration damper.
7. Remove crankshaft vibration damper.
8. Remove oil pan bolts, oil pan and gasket.
9. Remove engine front cover and water pump as assembly.
10. Remove and discard front cover gasket.
11. Use strap wrench tool No. D85L-0.000-A or equivalent to hold water pump pulley. Remove water pump pulley bolts and the pulley.
12. Remove water pump bolts and the water pump from engine front cover.
13. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Install new engine front cover gasket with suitable sealant.
b. Tighten water pump bolts to 15-21 ft lb and water pump pulley bolts to 12-18 ft lb.
c. Install crankshaft seal replacer/cover aligner tool No. T88T-6701-A or equivalent, and hold in position while tightening front cover bolts to 12-18 ft lb.
d. Tighten crankshaft vibration damper bolt to 110-130 ft lbs.
