Removal and Installation



Cylinder Head

Removal

1. Remove the intake manifold.
2. Remove the timing chains.
3. Remove the exhaust manifolds.






4. Slide hose clamp back and disconnect water heater supply tube.






5. Remove the studs.






6. Slide water heater tube back and remove. Discard the o-ring.

Caution: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges that make leak paths. Use a plastic craping tool to remove all traces of the head gasket.






7. Remove the bolts and the RH cylinder head.
- Discard the head gasket and clean the engine block surface with a plastic scraper and solvent.
- Use metal surface cleaner F4AZ-19A536-RA or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSE-M5B392-A.

Caution: The cylinder head bolts must be replaced with new bolts. They are tighten-to-yield designed and cannot be reused.

8. Remove the bolts and the LH cylinder head.
- Discard the head gasket and clean the engine block surface with a plastic scraper and solvent.
- Use metal surface cleaner F4AZ-19A536-RA or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSE-M5B392-A.

Installation






1. Install the (A) head gasket over the (B) dowel pins.
- The RH head gasket is shown; the LH head gasket is similar.






2. Install the (A) cylinder head on the (B) head gasket and loosely install the (C) bolts.
- The RH cylinder head is shown; the LH cylinder head is similar.






Note: Make sure to tighten the bolts in sequence in three stages.

3. Tighten the LH bolts in the sequence shown
- Stage 1.Tighten to 37 - 43 N.m
- Stage 2.Tighten an additional 85 - 95°
- Stage 3.Tighten an additional 85 - 95°






Note: Make sure to tighten the bolts in the following three stages.

4. Tighten the LH bolts in the sequence shown
- Stage 1.Tighten to 37 - 43 N.m
- Stage 2.Tighten an additional 85 - 95°
- Stage 3.Tighten an additional 85 - 95°






5. Install a new o-ring and position the water heater tube forward.
- Lubricate the o-ring seal with Ford premium cooling system fluid E2FZ-19549-AA (in Oregon, F5FZ-19549-CC in Canada, CXC-8-B) or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESE-M97B44-A.






6. Install the studs on the rear of the water heater tube.
7. Install the exhaust manifold.
8. Install the timing chains.
9. Install the intake manifold.
