Wheel Hub: Service and Repair
REMOVAL1. Turn off the air suspension switch, if so equipped.
WARNING: THE ELECTRICAL POWER TO THE AIR SUSPENSION SYSTEM MUST BE SHUT OFF PRIOR TO HOISTING JACKING OR TOWING AN AIR SUSPENSION VEHICLE. THIS CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED BY TURNING OFF THE AIR SUSPENSION SWITCH LOCATED IN THE RH KICK PANEL AREAS FAILURE TO DO SO CAN RESULT IN UNEXPECTED INFLATION OR DEFLATION OF THE AIR SPRINGS, WHICH CAN RESULT IN SHIFTING OF THE VEHICLE DURING THESE OPERATIONS.
2. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
3. Remove the front disc brake rotor.
4. Remove the front wheel hub nut.
(1) Remove the cotter pin.
(2) Remove the retainer.
(3) Remove the front wheel hub nut.
5. If equipped with 4-wheel anti-lock brake system (4WABS), remove the front disc brake rotor shield.
(1) Remove the bolts.
(2) Remove the front disc brake rotor shield.
6. If equipped with 4WABS, remove the front brake anti-lock sensor.
(1) Remove the bolt.
(2) Remove the front brake anti-lock sensor.
7. Remove the wheel hub.
(1) Remove the bolts.
(2) Push the CV joint inboard. Remove the wheel hub.
CAUTION: Do not overextend CV joint and boots when removing the hub and bearing assembly.
NOTE: The CV joint is a slip fit into the wheel hub and bearing. A puller will not normally be required.
8. Remove the seal.
INSTALLATION
1. Install the seal.
- Using the Seal Replacer, Threaded Drawbar and the Bearing Cup Replacer, install the seal.
2. Install the wheel hub.
(1) Position the wheel hub on the front wheel driveshaft and joint and into the front wheel knuckle.
(2) Install the bolts.
3. If equipped with 4WABS, install the front brake anti-lock sensor.
(1) Position the front brake anti-lock sensor.
(2) Install the bolt.
4. Install the front disc brake rotor shield.
(1) Position the front disc brake rotor shield.
(2) Install the bolts.
(3) Install the front axle hub nut.
(4) Install the retainer.
(5) Install the cotter pin.
5. Install the front disc brake rotor.
6. Clean the wheel hub and mounting surfaces.
WARNING: WHEN THE WHEEL IS INSTALLED, ALWAYS REMOVE ANY CORROSION, DIRT OR FOREIGN MATERIAL PRESENT ON THE MOUNTING SURFACES OF THE WHEELS OR THE SURFACES OF THE WHEEL HUB BRAKE DRUM OR BRAKE ROTOR THAT CONTACT THE WHEEL. INSTALLING WHEELS WITHOUT PROPER METAL-TO-METAL CONTACT AT THE WHEEL MOUNTING SURFACES CAN CAUSE THE LUG NUT TO LOOSEN AND THE WHEEL TO COME OFF WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION, CAUSING LOSS OF CONTROL.
7. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
8. Lower the vehicle.
NOTE: If equipped with air suspension, reactivate the system by fuming on the air suspension switch.
