Courtesy Lamp: Description and Operation
The courtesy lamps and running board lamps can be activated by the Generic Electronic Module (GEM) using the panel dimmer switch, keyless entry remote transmitter, or by any open or ajar door. The courtesy lamps will shut off when:- The doors are closed and the illuminated entry feature is not active.
- The vehicle speed is greater than 24 km/h (15 mph). The interior lamps will not be reactivated until the vehicle speed is less than 5 km/h (3 mph) and a new door open warning lamp switch signal is received.
The system inputs to the GEM are as follows:
- The door open warning lamps switches (grounded when the door is ajar; an open circuit when the door is closed).
- The Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) input.
The system output to the GEM is as follows:
- The interior lamp relay coil output. (Grounded when activated; open circuit when deactivated.)
Vehicles with Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) can activate the courtesy lighting and running board lamps when the ignition is OFF and either the unlock or panic buttons are pressed on the keyless entry remote transmitter. The courtesy lamps will turn off when any of the following conditions are met:
- The lock button is pressed on the keyless entry remote transmitter
- The ignition is turned to RUN, START, or ACC.
- 25 seconds have expired since the last unlock or panic signal was received.
