Removal
4.2L, and 4.6L Engines
1. WARNING: On vehicles equipped with an auxiliary battery, both the negative and positive battery cables must be disconnected.
Disconnect the battery.
2. Remove the air cleaner and intake duct assembly.
3. Remove the transmission fluid level indicator.
4. Remove the engine cover.
5. Note: Also refer to the two illustrations.
Remove the (A) nut (bolt for 4.6L engine) and the (B) bolt. With a suitable drain pan properly positioned, separate the (C) fluid filter tube from the (D) transmission and position aside.
6. Disconnect the electrical harness connectors.
7. Note: Also refer to the illustration.
Remove the (A) torque converter housing-to-engine retaining bolts. Position the (B) fuel and electrical harness bracket aside.
8. With the drain pan properly positioned, disconnect the fluid cooler tubes. Plug all fittings and position the tubes aside.
9. Raise and support the vehicle.
10. Remove the driveshaft.
11. Disconnect the shift cable at the transmission and position aside.
12. Note: Also refer to the illustration.
Remove the access plugs.
13. Remove the starter motor.
14. If so equipped, remove the (A) fasteners and the (B) front A/C deflector assembly.
15. Note: Also refer to the illustration.
Remove and discard the 4 torque converter-to-flexplate retaining nuts.
1 Rotate the (A) crankshaft pulley-to-crankshaft retaining bolt to position the (B) torque converter-to-flexplate retaining nut in the (C) opening.
2 Remove and discard the (B) torque converter-to-flexplate retaining nut.
- Repeat substeps 1 and 2 for each of the remaining torque converter-to-flexplate retaining nuts.
16. Disconnect the catalyst monitoring sensor harness connectors.
17. Remove the bolts.
18. Remove the (A) nuts. Separate the (B) Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) vacuum reservoir from the (C) frame and position aside.
19. Secure the (A) High Lift Transmission Jack to the (B) transmission.
20. Remove the crossmember.
1 Remove the crossmember-to-frame retaining nuts.
2 Remove the stud brackets.
3 Support the transmission support crossmember.
4 Remove the (A) transmission insulator and retainer-to-crossmember retaining nuts and the (B) transmission support crossmember.
21. Remove the (A) bolt. Loosen the (B) clamp. Remove the (C) bracket and position the (D) hanger aside.
22. On vehicles with a 4.2L engine, remove the bolts.
23. On vehicles with a 4.6L engine, remove the (A) bolts and the (B) flexplate inspection plate. Then, remove the (C) bolt.
24. On vehicles with a 4.6L engine remove the bolts.
25. Remove the transmission from the vehicle.
CAUTION: Watch for clearance between the transmission and the right side heat shield retaining bracket as well as other obstructions.
- Separate and back the transmission away from the engine, positioning the extension housing above the exhaust crossover pipe.
26. Install the Torque Converter Holding Tool.
WARNING: The torque converter must be held firmly in its installed position.
CAUTION: Watch for clearance between the transmission and the engine.
- Carefully tilt the front of the transmission downward.
CAUTION: Watch for clearance between the transmission and the exhaust crossover pipe.
Lower the transmission enough to clear the engine. Then, carefully pull the jack with the transmission toward the front of the vehicle, lowering the transmission as required until it is clear of the exhaust crossover pipe.
- Tilt the front of the transmission upward until level.
- Remove the transmission with the jack from under the vehicle.
