Removal

WARNING:
^ Do not smoke or carry lighted tobacco or open flame of any type when working on or near any fuel-related components. Highly flammable mixtures are always present and can be ignited, resulting in possible personal injury.
^ Fuel in the fuel system remains under high pressure even when the engine is not running.

1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
2. Remove the valve covers.
3. Remove the radiator.
4. Disconnect the Camshaft Position sensor (CMP sensor).
5. Remove the water pump.
6. Raise and support the vehicle.

7. Note: Only three bolts are required to secure the power steering pump.

Remove the bolts and position the power steering pump aside.

8. Disconnect the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor electrical connector.
9. Remove the drain plug and drain the engine oil.
10. Remove the crankshaft front seal.

11. Remove the bolts.
12. Lower the vehicle.

13. Remove the engine front cover fasteners.

14. Remove the engine front cover from the front cover to cylinder block dowels.

15. CAUTION: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges, which make leak paths.

Clean the sealing surfaces.

Installation

1. Note:
^ The timing chain is removed for clarity.
^ If not secured within 4 minutes, sealant must be removed and the sealing area cleaned with solvent. Allow to dry until there is no sign of wetness, or 4 minutes, whichever is longer. Failure to follow this procedure can cause future oil leakage.

Apply a bead of silicone along the cylinder head to block surface and the oil pan to block surface.
^ Use Silicone Gasket and Sealant F7AZ-19554-EA or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSE-M4G323-A4.

2. Install a new engine front cover gasket on the engine front cover, then position the engine front cover on the front cover to cylinder block dowels.

3. Loosely install the cover fasteners.
4. Tighten the fasteners in two stages following the sequence shown.
^ Stage 1: Tighten fasteners 1 through 5 to 20 - 30 Nm (15 - 22 ft. lbs.)
^ Stage 2: Tighten fasteners 6 through 15 to 40 - 55 Nm (30 - 41 ft. lbs.)

5. Note: Be sure to tighten the bolts in two stages.

Tighten the bolts in the sequence shown.
^ Stage 1: Tighten to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.)
^ Stage 2: Tighten an additional 60 degrees

6. Connect the CKP sensor electrical connector.

7. Install the bolts.
8. Lower the vehicle.
9. Install the water pump.

10. Connect the CMP electrical connector.
11. Raise and support the vehicle.
12. Install a new crankshaft front seal and the crankshaft pulley.
13. Lower the vehicle.
14. Install the valve covers.
15. Install the radiator and fill the cooling system.
16. Install the engine Air Cleaner (ACL) and the air cleaner outlet tube.
17. Connect the battery ground cable.
18. Fill the engine with oil.
^ Use engine oil meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C153-G.
