Vehicles Not Equipped with 7.3L Engine
1. WARNING: On vehicles equipped with an auxiliary battery, both the negative and positive battery cables must be disconnected.
Note: All gasoline vehicles will have new adaptive shift strategies. Whenever the vehicles battery has been disconnected for any type of service or repairs the strategy parameters that are stored in the Keep Alive Memory (KAM) will be lost. The strategy will start to relearn. once the battery is reconnected and the vehicle is driven. This is a temporary condition and will return to normal operating condition once the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) relearns all the parameters from the driving/operating conditions. There is no time frame set for this process. If a concern is present during down shifts or converter clutch apply, it is not the shift strategy and will require diagnosis.
The customer needs to be notified that they may experience slightly different upshifts either soft or firm and that this condition is temporary and will eventually return to normal operating condition.
- Disconnect the battery ground cables.
2. Remove the air cleaner air intake duct assembly.
3. Remove the transmission fluid level indicator.
4. Remove the engine cover.
5. Remove the (A) nuts. Separate the (B) vapor management valve assembly from the (C) cowl, and position it aside.
6. Remove the (A) nut and the (B) bolt and (D) stud. With a suitable drain pan properly positioned, separate the (C) fluid filler tube from the (E) short fluid inlet tube, and secure it aside.
7. Disconnect the electrical harness connectors.
8. Note: As the bolts are removed, note the length of each bolt for proper location during installation.
Remove the transmission-to-engine retaining bolts.
9. Raise and support the vehicle.
10. Remove the driveshaft.
11. Disconnect the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS).
12. Disconnect the connector.
13. Disconnect the connector.
14. Disconnect the shift cable at the transmission and position it aside.
15. Remove the starter motor.
16. Remove the cylinder block opening cover.
17. Remove and discard the torque converter-to-flexplate retaining nuts.
18. CAUTION: Be sure not to raise the back of the transmission too high. If it makes contact with the underbody, damage to the TSS sensor can occur.
Install the High Lift Transmission Jack with the E40D Transmission Jack Adapter to the transmission.
19. Remove the transmission support crossmember.
1 Remove the exhaust heat shield bolts.
2 Remove the nuts.
3 Remove the stud brackets.
4 Support the transmission support crossmember.
5 Remove the (A) nuts and the (B) transmission support crossmember.
20. Loosen the (A) bolts and remove the (B) heat shield.
21. With a suitable drain pan properly positioned, disconnect the fluid cooler tubes at the Cooler Bypass Valve (CBV). Plug all fittings and position the tubes aside.
22. Remove the flexplate inspection cover.
1 Remove the bolts.
2 Remove the flexplate inspection cover.
23. Remove the bolts.
24. CAUTION: Use care while removing the transmission to avoid damage to the TSS sensor.
CAUTION: Do not use the cooler bypass valve as a handle. Damage to the cooler bypass valve assembly may occur or damage to the case may result.
CAUTION: Use a safety strap to hold the transmission to the High Lift Transmission Jack. Place the strap behind the Cooler Bypass Valve (CBV) to prevent damage to the cooler bypass valve.
Remove the transmission from the valve.
- Move the transmission extension housing with a slight side-to-side motion to separate the transmission from the engine and the torque converter from the flexplate.
- Back the transmission, with the jack, out and away from the engine until the torque converter is clear of the flexplate.
- Lower the transmission jack.
- Remove the transmission from under the vehicle.
25. WARNING: The torque converter is very heavy.
Note: Fluid loss will occur when the torque converter is removed.
If required, remove the torque converter from the transmission.
1 Install the Converter Handles and position theri1 at 6 o'clock and 12 o'clock.
2 Carefully remove the (A) torque converter from the (B) transmission by pulling evenly on the handles.
Vehicles Equipped with 7.3L Engine

WARNING: On vehicles equipped with a 7.3L engine, both the primary and secondary batteries must be disconnected.
Note: All gasoline vehicles will have new adaptive shift strategies. 27. Remove the air cleaner air intake duct assembly.
28. Remove the transmission fluid level indicator.
29. Remove the engine cover.

Remove the (A) nut and the (B) bolt. With a suitable drain pan properly positioned, separate the (C) fluid filler tube from the (D) short fluid inlet tube, and secure it aside.
31. Note: Also refer to the two illustrations.
Disconnect the harness connectors at the (A) Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS), the (B) digital Transmission Range (TR) sensor, the (C) solenoid body and TSS. Position the (D) harness aside.
32. Note: As the bolts are removed, note the length of each bolt for proper location during installation.
Remove the transmission-to-engine retaining bolts.
33. Raise and support the vehicle.
34. Remove the driveshaft.
35. Remove the transmission-mounted parking brake assembly (if so equipped).
36. Disconnect the shift cable at the transmission and position it aside.
37. Remove the starter motor.
38. Remove the 5 (A) bolts and the (B) flexplate inspection cover.
39. Remove and discard the torque converter-to-flexplate retaining nuts.
40. CAUTION: Be sure not to raise the back of the transmission too high. If it makes contact with the underbody, damage to the TSS sensor can occur.
Install the High Lift Transmission Jack with the E40D Transmission Jack Adapter to the transmission.
41. Remove the transmission support crossmember.
1 Remove the crossmember-to-frame retaining nuts.
2 Remove the stud brackets.
3 Support the transmission support crossmember.
4 Remove the (A) nuts and the (B) transmission support crossmember.
42. Loosen the (A) bolts and remove the (B) heat shield.
43. With a suitable drain pan properly positioned, disconnect the fluid cooler tubes at the Cooler Bypass Valve (CBV). Plug all fittings and position the tubes aside.
44. Note: This bolt will remain in the converter housing due to proximity of the exhaust pipe.
Completely loosen the RH transmission-to-engine bolt.
45. Remove the LH transmission-to-,engine bolt
46. CAUTION: Use care while removing the transmission to avoid damage to the TSS sensor.
CAUTION: Do not use the cooler bypass valve as a handle. Damage to the cooler bypass valve assembly may occur or damage to the case may result.
CAUTION: Use a safety strap to hold the transmission to the High Lift Transmission Jack. Place the strap behind the Cooler Bypass Valve (CBV) to prevent damage to the cooler bypass valve.
Remove the transmission from the valve.
1 Move the transmission extension housing with a slight side-to-side motion to separate the transmission from the engine and the torque converter from the flexplate.
2 Back the transmission, with the jack, out and away from the engine& until the torque converter is clear of the flexplate.
3 Lower the transmission jack.
4 Remove the transmission from under the vehicle.
47. WARNING: The torque converter is very heavy.
Note: Fluid loss will occur when the torque converter is removed.
If required, remove the torque converter from the transmission.
1 Install the Converter Handles and position them at 6 o'clock and 12 o'clock.
2 Carefully remove the (A) torque converter from the (B) transmission by pulling evenly on the handles.
