ISSUE
Some vehicles may exhibit a "miss" sound from the exhaust. This may be caused by the design of the exhaust Y-pipe which can cause a "miss" like sound known as impingement.

ACTION
Replace the Y-pipe with updated design to reduce "miss" sound and update the calibration of the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

REMOVAL OF OLD Y-PIPE

1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.

2. Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor electrical connections and transfer both heated oxygen sensors to the new Y-pipe. Apply a small amount of Ford Anti-Seize Compound (F6AZ-9L494-AA) (or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESE-M12A-A) to the threads on both oxygen sensors.

3. Remove the LH and RH nuts connecting the Y-pipe to the exhaust manifolds.

4. Remove the three (3) nuts which attach the Y-pipe to the catalytic convener and discard the gasket.

INSTALLATION OF NEW Y-PIPE

Refer to the appropriate model year Workshop Manual section 309-00 for installation instructions and specifications.

1. Position the new Y-pipe (1C3Z-5246-AA).

2. Install the new flange gasket (F6TZ-5C226-BA) and three (3) nuts.

3. Install the two (2) nuts on both the right and left side Y-pipe-to-exhaust manifold connections.

4. Connect the heated oxygen sensor electrical connections.

5. Lower the vehicle.

6. Reprogram the PCM with updated calibration. Refer to the PCM Calibration Information Chart as shown.

Obtain an Authorized Modifications Decal (FPS 8262 - obtainable through DOES II, 25/pkg) and list the date, dealer number, and summary of modifications performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal. Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
