Figure 1:

Selected transmissions have an orange "PRIOR TO REPAIR" tag (Figure 1) on the transmission fluid pan. The orange tag refers to this TSB which includes specific instructions to be followed prior to replacement and/or repair and provides a toll-free number to be called by all U.S. and Canadian dealers (not applicable outside the U.S. and Canada).

ACTION
Prior to December 31, 2000, do not disassemble or repair these orange tagged 4R100 transmissions. Perform the following diagnostic steps, record your findings, and contact Ford Motor Company at 1-800-543-8742. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Check and record transaxle fluid level and condition.

a. If low, fill with MERCON (R) Automatic Transmission Fluid (XT-2-QDX) to the proper level and check for leakage.

b. If a pan gasket leak is the only concern, DO NOT call the toll-free number. Service as required and follow all the normal service procedures as outlined in the appropriate Workshop Manual.

2. Check the harness connectors for proper installation at the Digital Transmission Range (DTR) sensor, solenoid body case connector, Turbine Speed Sensor (TSS), and, if equipped, the Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor and Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS).

3. Perform on-board diagnostic tests and record all Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs).

4. If no fault codes are present, go to Step 5. If fault codes are present, perform the required pinpoint tests as directed in the Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) Service Manual or Workshop Manual for any fault codes received. Repair only the non-transmission codes and verify the transmission symptom still exists.

5. If the transmission symptom still exists, refer to the diagnosis by symptom in the Workshop Manual to determine if the concern is internal to the transmission.

NOTE:
ALL DIAGNOSTIC INFORMATION (FLUID LEVEL AND CONDITION, DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES, TEST RESULTS, TRANSMISSION CONCERN AND TRANSMISSION TAG INFORMATION MUST BE RECORDED BEFORECALLING THE TOLL-FREE NUMBER.

6. If the transmission requires service, call Ford Motor Company toll-free at 1-800-543-8742 between 8:00 AM and 4:30 PM EST (U.S. and Canadian dealers only).

7. This orange tag will be void after December 31, 2000. After this void date, do not call the toll-free number; repair as required.

NOTE:
DO NOT DISASSEMBLE OR REPAIR THE TRANSMISSION (OTHER THAN DESCRIBED IN THIS TSB) PRIOR TO CALLING THE TOLL-FREE NUMBER.
