REVERSE PARK AID - FALSE ACTIVATION

FORD:
2000-2001 EXCURSION, EXPEDITION

ISSUE
The reverse Park Aid System may sound an audible warning tone when the vehicle is in Reverse even though there are no objects behind the vehicle. This may be due to a malfunctioning proximity sensor(s).

ACTION
Clean proximity sensors in rear bumper and evaluate. If cleaning is not successful, then perform diagnostics to determine which sensor is not operating properly. Replace the inoperative sensor only. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Clean proximity sensors with a moist shop towel and perform diagnostics.

2. Using New Generation Star (NGS) Tester with version 16.2 or higher, observe Park Aid Module Parameter Identification Displays (PIDs) for distance information by selecting the Park Aid Module in the NGS menu. PIDs are identified as:

^ LR_CTRD (driver's side inner sensor distance to obstacle detected in centimeters.

^ RR_CTRD (passenger's side inner sensor distance to obstacle detected in centimeters)

^ LR_CNRD (driver's side outer sensor distance to obstacle detected in centimeters)

^ RR_CNRD (passenger's side outer sensor distance to obstacle detected in centimeters)

NOTE WHEN REPLACING ANY REVERSING SENSING SYSTEM (RSS) REAR BUMPER SENSORS ON AN EXCURSION OR EXPEDITION, YOU MUST ONLY USE THE YL1Z-15K859 PART. DO NOT USE THE XF2Z-15K859 PART. THE YL1Z PART IS RECOGNIZED BY THE LIGHTER COLOR HALF HOUSING. SYMPTOMS WHEN USING THE INCORRECT SENSOR PART WILL BE THE FALSE DETECTION OF OBSTACLES AND INTERMITTENT CONTINUOUS TONES.

3. Passing condition: with no objects behind vehicle and no compressed air equipment being used nearby, each sensor PID as described in Step 2 should display a full scale numerical reading of 255. If any other reading is noted then replace only the sensor that is out of specification. The sensors are retained in the bumper by wing clips.
